What are some of the Emmy categories over the years in which any and all of the nominees could have easily won (ie., everyone in that category had great tapes, buzz for all the nominees, etc.)?
Drama Actress last year. I could have seen any of them winning (though Wright was brought down by her now infamous tape selection flub).
The first thing I thought of upon seeing this thread was Drama Lead Actor from 2010:
Kyle Chandler – Friday Night Lights
Matthew Fox – Lost
Michael C. Hall – Dexter
Jon Hamm – Mad Men
Hugh Laurie – House
and the winner, Bryan Cranston – Breaking Bad
I’ve never seen a category so flawless. I remember even Edie Falco said that each and every nominee in the category deserve to go home with the Emmy at the ceremony.
After that night, Michael C. Hall (who had a great tape and was considered the frontrunner) definetely gave up on the Emmys and chose poorly the following year. With Bryan Cranston out of the race, he could easily have won with “My Bad” (S05E01), since voters didn’t mind Jon Hamm’s “The Suitcase”. Poor Michael.
Last year’s Supporting Actress Mini/TV Movie was excellent, as well. Easily, any of the nominees could have won and would have been worthy. People disagree with Bates’ win, but you have to admit she was pretty stellar in those first few episodes of “Coven.”
Drama Series, 2015.
The 2010 Drama Lead Actor race has to be my all-time favorite, but the 2002 race is only a few leagues behind it.
You had Martin Sheen for the third season of The West Wing, Michael C. Hall and Peter Krause for the first two seasons of Six Feet Under, and Kiefer Sutherland and Michael Chiklis for the debut seasons of 24 and The Shield, respectively.
