Forgive me if a similar thread has been created on here, but I would love to get people’s opinions on their personal top ten choices for the best comedy and drama series on television in the past 25 years (from 1988-present):

    MY COMEDY CHOICES:
    1. 30 Rock (2006-2013)
    2. Seinfeld (1989-1998)
    3. Louie (2010-present)
    4. Parks and Recreation (2009-present)
    5. Arrested Development (2003-2005; 2013)
    6. The Simpsons (1989-present)
    7. Roseanne (1988-1997)
    8. Frasier (1993-2004)
    9. Will & Grace (1998-2006)
    10. The Larry Sanders Show (1992-1998)

Feel free to critique my choices and explain your own!

    1. Arrested Development
    2. Roseanne
    3. The Simpsons
    4. 30 Rock
    5. Cheers (with only half of its run airing in the past 25 years)
    6. The Larry Sanders Show
    7. The Office (Brit version)/Scrubs
    8. Gilmore girls
    9. South Park
    10. Friends/Curb Your Enthusiasm/Frasier

I could have penalized AD for the fourth but decided not to. Never cared for Seinfeld with the exception of a few episodes. No Will & Grace because it became pretty crappy after season 3. No Louie, yet. Parks and Rec has had two really good seasons (two and three). The rest for me have been mostly bland and/or annoying. Shout out to Moonlighting, Martin, The Office (American), Northern Exposure, Community, Seinfeld (for those undeniably brilliant episodes), and Sex and the City.

    1. The Simpsons
    2. Louie (fuck yeah)
    3. 30 Rock
    4. The Office (original UK version)
    5. Arrested Development
    6. Seinfeld
    7. Gilmore Girls
    8. Futurama
    9. Freaks & Geeks
    10. Curb Your Enthusiasm

    OTHER SHOWS:
Came close to including Malcolm In the Middle and/or Flight Of The Concords. Unfortunately I have yet to watch Cheers and The Larry Sanders Show, but I look forward to catching up one day. I’m not that big a fan of Roseanne, but I can see why a lot of people would love it. Moonlighting and Sex And The City were too uneven, even if they had great moments. Parks has been a major disappointment after season 3. Community has some great episodes, but it’s also too uneven. Friends, Will & Grace and Golden Girls are enjoyable and nice, but also extremely overrated (Friends less so than the other two).

Seinfeld is the best.  No ifs, ands, or buts.  No show gets me laughing as much; it’s not even close, even when I’ve seen the show time and time again.  There are so many classic episodes, even in the early seasons before the show reached its greatness in probably years four and five.  And what’s even better is Seinfeld holds up and remains endlessly rewatchable in reruns on WB and TBS.  The cast was phenomenal: of course there is the core four (of which it can be said all four are legendary characters).  Kramer one of the best comedic characters in television history, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus the best actor on the show.  Jason Alexander should have at least one Emmy for George, and Jerry was the perfect straight character/middle man that made his three compatriots so funny.  The guest actors almost equally memorable, starting with Newman, the Costanzas, Elaine’s bosses, George Steinbrenner, the Soup Nazi, Jackie Chiles, Bette Midler, Bryan Cranston(!), Jerry’s girlfriends…really, it goes on and on.  Fantastic show, that at its core works because its so damn funny and was a product of its decade, tapping into the cultural happenings, movies, events, O.J. evading the cops, Giuliani winning the NYC mayor, to make it more iconic than any other comedy series.

You’re not allowed to like Gilmore girls if you don’t love Roseanne. That’s just a rule. A pretty sensible rule at that.

Here is something Id like to ask: When Seinfeld was on Julia Dreyfus was nominated in the supporting category but it seems to me that she had almost equal screentime to Jerry who was alwas in lead, maybe Im wrong and she supported him but I feel she could have been lead but of course that would have made it harder for her to win

    Huh?

There’s no Roseanne on brazilian TV, the few episodes I have seen didn’t make me bother to reach for more, and honestly, I don’t see the resemblance.

We can make up rules now? Ok. You can’t vote for Friends if you don’t have Seinfeld in your list and if you think Mad About You is better than Seinfeld.

Oh, Rena. Please stop getting mad at me. Just a joke. Although, of course, ASP got her first big break writing for Roseanne and says that show greatly influenced her writing on Gilmore girls. If you’ve seen a good deal of Roseanne you could see the influence. I suggest finding a way to watch seasons one-five. It really is some of the most funny and honest stuff ever on TV and has aged quite well. The entire series is on DVD. Also, I don’t think Mad About You is better than Seinfeld. I did enjoy the first two seasons of MAY more than any season of Seinfeld other than the fourth. But I do admit the entirety of Seinfeld is superior. I’m not a fan of either.
