Some shows have a great pilot and fall off track later in the season, while others gradually improve after a mediocre start.
What’s been the best pilot this decade? For me I was absolutely captivated by Westworld’s pilot.December 11, 2016 at 10:20 am #1201966370

Game of Thrones, UnREAL, F is for Family, Togetherness, True Detective, Fargo, Silicon Valley, Transparent, Manhattan, The Americans, Boardwalk Empire, Justified, Treme.
I’m not passionate about many/any. Game of Thrones may be the best one.December 11, 2016 at 2:13 pm #1201966474

The Game of Thrones pilot, while good for nostalgic value with the benefit of hindsight, was not good when it first came out. If I remember correctly the original pilot with the original cast was so bad that they had to reshoot with a different cast (the current cast).
I think the Mr Robot pilot was better tbh.December 11, 2016 at 2:55 pm #1201966505
For straight up series, the best pilots have been Homeland and Boardwalk Empire. (the latter unfortunately peaking at that episode)
If we count limited series, than I also throw in True Detective, and probably the best of all of them, the masterpiece pilot for The Night Of.December 11, 2016 at 3:13 pm #1201966517
I’d say the Pilot of IZombie was pretty phenomenal, talk about instantly addicting. I also really loved the Pilots of Game of Thrones Fargo S1 (The Crocodile’s Dilemma) and I thought Better Call Saul had an very interesting and well-done Pilot as well. 🙂December 11, 2016 at 4:36 pm #1201966563

I thought it was for best in the last decade, I just realized it was for the last 6-7 yearsDecember 11, 2016 at 8:03 pm #1201966877
As horrible as the show became later on, Glee’s pilot was such a breath of fresh air in 2009. It has to be one of the best of the decade.
Also shout outs to the pilots of Homeland and Modern Family.December 11, 2016 at 9:20 pm #1201966999
Outlander’s pilot was amazing and I became obsessed with the show overnight. Instantly captivated. Such a beautiful episode and I love the emphasis on a woman’s sexuality.
And this might seem random, but I loved the Jessica Jones pilot.

For me, looking at 2010 onward, it has to be The Last Man on Earth. It’s a really good show, but that pilot was like nothing else. I’d also include Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which set up a dark, DARK premise with such nimble comedic ability that it’s easy to take for granted the level on which Fey and Carlock are operating.
