I would add Life as We Know It, the wonderful ABC series that ran a mere dozen episodes in 2004.

Buffy is my favorite show ever, so by default it’s my favorite “teen” series, but I also don’t think of it as a “teen” series.

My favorite “teen” series would be One Tree Hill, Skins (UK), Dawson’s Creek, The O.C., Felicity.

Shows that sort of fall into the category that I love would be Veronica Mars, Everwood, Friday Night Lights, and The Vampire Diaries.

The second season of TVD was comparable to peak True Blood and pretty good ‘Buffy’. But the first and third seasons didn’t do a ton for me. Stopped watching after season 4. Also, the entire cast looked 35+ from day one.

Season 2 is one of my favorite season of any series ever. Terrific storyline.

Lauren Cohan gave a nomination worthy performance that season, and it still haunts me how good she was.

“Someone is staring at you in ‘Personal Growth’.”

    Gossip Girl

One Tree Hill – in particular, Sophia Bush

    Friday Night Lights

Degrassi – the early seasons were amazing

Agree with all of the mentions of My So Called Life and Freaks and Geeks.

Would also love to shut out British series My Mad Fat Diary.

I love all this praise for The Vampire Diaries, the early years. S1-2 are perfect TV to me. S3 is pretty great too, especially the finale.

I love Lady Bird but I just realized that it’s basically a 2017 version of My so called life, all the way down the the bad red dye job, which I’m fine with TBH.

My list would include, in no particular order:

    Dramas:

My So-Called Life: Strong writing, well defined characters and most importantly this is a show that took its teen characters seriously.

13 Reasons Why: A fascinating premise; writing that kept you guessing each episode and that kept me glued to my seat.

Party of Five: Before there was “This Is Us”, it was “Party of Five” that made you weep for an hour each week. It did a good job of creating a group of teens you rooted for and wanted to make it through. It was helped by solid acting and fantastic writing that dealt with a number of serious issues.

Beverly Hills, 90210: It could easily be written off as “just a dumb soap opera”, but BH 90210 was something special and was a cultural phenomenon. It kind of created the teen drama category and created a group of characters you wanted to watch every week. It was very addictive.

Dawson’s Creek: It focused on teens that seemed like real teens; it is a seminal show for many in my generation and featured star-making performance from Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, James Van Der Beek and Michelle Williams.

    Comedies:

Glee: The first two seasons are some of the best TV of the last decade. It featured a unique premise that gave life to some truly memorable performances and showcased a diverse group of characters. It also had a profound influence on the music industry.

Saved By The Bell: Cheesy, Cheeky and not at all “serious”, this show earns points for doing what it did best; entertain. It is a staple of my TV diet and among the best teen shows ever.

Blossom: It earns points for showcasing a female lead in a time when most teen comedies had male protagonists (think Growing Pains, Family Ties, Webster; etc). It earns extra points for making the title character articulate, intelligent and down to earth. Blossom had more on her mind than just dating; she had plans for the future that included college.

Moesha: In some ways a carbon copy of “Blossom”; this show set itself apart by featuring an exclusively black cast and by hiring Brandy as its lead star. At the time she was a huge pop star and this show actually was pretty fantastic.

Buffy. And a huge guilty pleasure of mine (I feel embarrassed of even talking online about this), Dawson’s Creek.

I loved TVD and it featured so many awards worthy performances, mainly by Nina Dobrev and Joseph Morgan.
Also, its spin-off starring Joseph Morgan, especially its first season, was so awards worthy for me. The performances by the 3 leads were great along with the directing and writing, the latter not on TVD (S1 & S2) levels though.
