Neil Patrick Harris’ new variety sketch series premieres tonight on NBC. This could potentially become a huge player at the Emmys (variety sketch, original music & lyrics, guest actors, and maybe even Neil Patrick Harris in lead actor comedy).

Reese Witherspoon will be the show’s first guest. Discuss.

Anyone seen Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway? I know the British GD members would have, but if anyone outside the UK hasn’t seen it, you should check it out. It is a great show, and of course what this show is adapted from. I don’t think NPH has the lovable charm those two have, but I’ll give it a chance.

I would imagine even if this show is average/boring it’s a safe bet for Variety Sketch Series and NPH would easily get Game Show host nom if they put him in that category.

I would see them putting him in Reality Host rather than Game Show like Jane Lynch for Hollywood Game Night. I think the Daytime Emmys put their foot down on allowing primetime game shows into their races because I don’t think Billy Eichner is eligiable for Daytime Emmys anymore for Billy on the Street.

I take back these. There’s not much acting (at least not in the premiere). Neil Patrick Harris is a reality host. I’m surprised they didn’t have a musical number for him.

The Voice undercover sketch was good. I liked the blind audition prank. The rest meh. I hated that last bit. What the hell was that? I don’t expect this show to find an audience. Pretty negative reactions on twitter.

I want a gif of Reese Witherspoon saying “I won an Oscar for singing someone else’s songs, karaoke’s done alright by me.”

If this goes Variety Sketch Series like it should, then NPH would get in as host with the producers catch-all nods. It’s playing both sides of the fence for him to get into Reality Host too. It’s not a reality series or game show.

Yeah he’s been making an effort to shoot down the variety show title all week on the talk shows but I though that was how it was initially sold. Yeah I enjoyed The Voice sketch but the rest was ok. I liked the game with the girl in the audience but it definitely needs some work. I think some people are being way to harsh on twitter, it’s an experimental show that will work out bumps as time goes by seeing what works and what doesn’t. All I have to say is leave Carrot Top out of future episodes

Hoping this doesn’t do well and fades away. The stage needs to be set for Queen Maya Rudolph and King Martin Short to dominate the live Variety Show. A little waif like Neil Patrick Harris shouldn’t be allowed to stand in their way.

If it is anything like Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway (on which this show is based), then it pretty much is a Variety show.

Comedy sketches, not like SNL but practical jokes/set-ups on famouses, or involving famouses.
Interactions with the audience & playing games with them.
In the UK there is Ant v Dec, where they compete in challenges on a large ranging scale. Anything from climbing buildings, to abseils, to quizzes.
They have Little Ant & Dec, two young boys who do interviews with big stars.
The End of the Show Show – where they do something involving singing/dancing normally with ‘experts’ in that field.

It’s been running for years in the UK, and has grown into itself as an entertainment giant. But then the UK has nothing else like this. If there are teething problems, then with a show like this, that can lend itself to doing virtually anything, let it breathe.

I really liked this premiere episode but the couple that Neil followed for all that time was my fav part. My grade: A+

Man this was painful to watch. What was the point of spying on that couple? They just get a free honeymoon? That intro was rough too and then we learn it was Reese Witherspoon. It had potential but this entire episode fell so flat. My roommate even had to leave the room because he couldn’t watch anymore.

I was severely disappointed with this show.  Maybe my expectations were off, which led to some of the disappointment with the overall direction, but I was expecting much more of a variety / sketch series, and instead, was left with “pranks” that were a letdown (a la The Voice), musical numbers that were a disaster (Gloria Gaynor), “stunts” that weren’t impressive nor funny (Reese Witherspoon vs. competition), and a very confusing ending dance number.  I can see that the bones are there to setup a few great jokes / skits here and there, but overall, I just can’t see this format taking off – there’s no real theme, and it doesn’t seem to allow much room for NPH to actually be very funny.  The “guest host” each week has such an odd role too – relegated to standing to the side and voicing, and not really using any talent at all.

I really like NPH, so I am going to watch another 2-3 weeks to try to see if the show falls into its rhythm, but the issues I had from the first week weren’t related to first-show jitters or execution, but were with the overall writing and direction of the show, so I am not sure they will be worked out in time as the actors become more confident.

    “Reese Witherspoon” – C-
    MVP – N/A

I think there is room for both of them. I’m glad NBC is putting faith in some of these more experimental shows
