As great as Anthony Anderson is here, it’s the ensemble that really gets to shine and help prop up his performance (which I’m guessing is the only element that the Emmys will ever deem to recognize). Tracee Ellis-Ross is such a strong counter to him, and the kids are as specific in their acting choices as ever. It’s always nice to see both Laurence Fishburne and Jenifer Lewis on here. They might as well be series regulars instead of “special guest stars” or however they’re contractually billed. Somewhat dicey episode in Jack’s use of the N-word in mixed company, but it was handled in about the funniest and even-handed way I’ve seen it presented on a network comedy (another way of saying it’s never happened from what I can gather or remember). I still get a kick out of Dre’s lovable and dopey coworkers lol. I’m excited where they’re going this season, and it looks like it hasn’t missed a beat since its stellar debut.

The gun episode was a bit much, but the next one about Pops’s fear of doctors was very good and funny. More consistent laughs per episode than anything I’ve seen on “Modern Family” so far this season. Kinda sad that it will still get automatic nominations (though that might be on the decline now), while this show will likely only get Anthony Anderson in, and even that could be shaky. He’s the standout in virtually every episode, so better that than no acknowledgment at all, I guess.

Grade for “Dr. Hell No”: A-October 9, 2015 at 5:28 am #362518Yeah the gun episode preached a little too much for my taste, it was as annoying as certain things way back on the pilot were. But the episode was still funny. The Pops dying episode was much better. The show is still great. I think Anderson, Fishburne and…forgot the name of the grandmother….all did a great job.
