This is the new documentary premiering on HBO channels all this month. Needless to say, it’s a tough and bittersweet watch, but a fascinating and informative document on these two legendary icons as mother and daughter first. It’s all just so much.
This will also be a major Emmy contender this fall wherever it lands.
I’ve also seen “Wishful Drinking” recently, and that was a nice watch too.
Check this out ASAP!
It’s VERY moving. The bit about the SAG Awards ceremony brokey heart.
I watched this the morning after it premiered on HBO – it was honestly the perfect film to watch in the aftermath of these tragedies. Such an honest, hilarious, beautiful portrayal of two Hollywood legends and their unique (but not perfect) bond. Carrie was just a firecracker throughout and gave me even more key bits of life advice than i’d already been exposed to by her. And the film does a beautiful job of painting Debbie’s earnest love of acting, singing and dancing. It certainly has some extra poignancy now, but I would’ve enjoyed it even if they were with us. A very pleasant watch if you’re missing Carrie and Debbie.
Would this be eligible for the Oscars like Going Clear and other HBO documentaries?
There are new documentary branch rules that state a documentary feature must have a seven-day theatrical run in BOTH “Los Angeles County and the Borough of Manhattan” during the eligibility period to be eligible for Academy consideration, along with a bunch of other qualifiers. If “Bright Lights” had all of that, then sure. I’m leaning toward no. I think this was meant primarily as an HBO vehicle, and as far as awards go, compete at the Emmys. It’s surely awards-worthy regardless.
This was great – I can’t imagine Emmy voters will be able to resist.
I wonder if it will have to compete against 13th in the doc categories – I hate the new trend of docs double dipping at the Oscars and Emmys.
