I am watching the show right now. Janney and Faris are on screen together so far for the entire episode. In both of Janney’s suggested submissions, she had equal (if not more) screen time than Faris. In the other 2 episodes I have seen she is on screen with Faris all the time. It’s fairly obvious this is a co lead show.
On the surface, this seems like a rather awful case of category fraud. Really selfish too seeing she has 4 Emmys at home (with a 5th on the way for Masters of Sex). And 2 of them are for Lead Actress so she is an established TV leading lady.
I feel bad for the legitimate supporting actresses like Chulmsky, Mulgrew, and Biailik. Janney probably could have gotten McCarthy’s slot. Very unnecessary.July 14, 2014 at 7:22 pm #323201
I think she is clearly supporting in the show, and it is so clearly a show about Faris’ character. If you want a specific episode, look at “Big Sur and Strawberry Lube”. Janney is in one scene, and Faris is in every one.

Yeah, I would have a hard time even making a case for Lead at all. Faris is clearly the lead of the show, and Janney’s role is to support the protagonist’s journey. Sure, there are certain episodes more focused on her, but the majority of the episodes are focused greatly on Faris; people are touting certain episodes as likely submissions solely because those are the few where she does get a big focus.July 14, 2014 at 8:39 pm #323203
Janney is 100% supporting. The show is clearly about Faris and mostly through her POV. But, yes, there are episodes where Janney does a lot, thus those should be her possible submissions.
Considering how a lot of people thought Faris would get a nomination, if Janney had submitted in lead and gotten in, then people would be saying that Janney stole Faris’s spot, the “true lead.”
Mulgrew practically has a whole episode to herself (which will definitely be her submission), doesn’t mean she’s “lead.”July 14, 2014 at 8:44 pm #323204
Janney has her showcase episodes where she’s front and center, but Faris is the lead of “Mom” with Janney supporting. There are multiple episodes where Bonnie isn’t the focus at all and in the background as a supporting character. In Janney’s two major Emmy episodes, yes, the attention and screentime is in her favor, but a lead actress nomination would have been far-fetched based on the season as a whole.July 14, 2014 at 10:20 pm #323205
If you don’t like category fraud, better not look at the so called “miniseries” nominees. Complete joke.July 14, 2014 at 10:29 pm #323206
To answer the orignal question, watch episodes: Pilot – 22. You’ll see Faris is lead and Janney is clearly supporting.July 14, 2014 at 11:17 pm #323207
I’ll take everyones word on it because I have only seen like 5 episodes. Just seemed weird watching the ones I did because she and Faris seemed to be getting equal focus.July 15, 2014 at 6:22 am #323208
Faris has the lead character, but that doesn’t make Janney supporting. At least 45% percent of the series belongs to her, and within the context of it being a two woman show that makes her in my book lead. It’s not the most egregious category fraud, so can’t get too upset about it. However, if Faris were male there’d be no one arguing Janney is supporting.July 15, 2014 at 1:21 pm #323209
Janney is definitely supporting. It’s sort of a Niles/Costanza role; really prominent and equal screentime to the lead in some episodes but very clearly the second-lead. Except she doesn’t always get a storyline like those guys did. Watching Janney’s suggested submissions isn’t a good example; obviously those would be episodes where she has a bigger role than the norm. I probably wouldn’t blink if she submitted to Lead or Supporting, but I certainly expected Supporting.July 15, 2014 at 1:39 pm #323210
How do people feel about her chances?
Somehow, I feel that she is so obviously the best in Drama Guest Actress that she’ll win there and this category will go to someone else. Even if all voters don’t necessarily think that way.July 15, 2014 at 1:54 pm #323211

Fun! How was that experience?July 15, 2014 at 3:39 pm #323213

This is why I mentioned it being a two woman makes me see her as lead. If Mom were a four or five person ensemble series things would be different, but with it focusing almost entirely on two characters Janney having slightly less than Faris doesn’t equate to her being supporting, not in a 22 episode series. If Seinfeld and George were the only two main characters I’d see George as lead as well.
