Most of us who’ve watched the episodes think the Melissa McCarthy’s submission has a real shot at taking down Julia Louis-Dreyfus in “Crate.” Yeah, Julia made a strong submission, but McCarthy’s is a whopper of a surprise:

    THE PROS:

    — She’s utterly appealing, vulnerable and adorable when she reaches out for help from her shrink and from Mike to cope with the sudden recollection of her father’s death when she was 10.

    — If Emmys are all about voter giving hugs (and they are), then McCarthy may be irresistible

    — If Emmys are largely about empathy (and they are), then being chubby may be a big plus. Aging Emmy voters (who are all getting rather thickset themselves) feel special compassion. This may be one of the reasons that Meritt Weaver pulled off that upset last year.

    THE CONS:

    — The series is laughably lightweight, but, hey, McCarthy pulled off a victory here once before. However, that was back in her hot “Bridesmaid” year. Maybe that helped her?

    WHAT DO YOU THINK?

McCarthy is a serious contender because of her really solid submission, and because of JLD’s arguably weakest submission to date (Tears and Running were both unbeatable slamdunks IMO). McCarthy still has a buzzing film career with Tammy (despite its mixed reviews) and with a couple more coming up (isn’t she in a film with Bill Murray soon?) and is generally likable as an actress. This is a tough one.

I think Amy Poehler is the only one that could take Dreyfus down. McCarthy’s episode isn’t the strongest but she has the edge that she is the movie star with a huge fan base so she could win just from being so beloved. I really hope Poehler can take both of them down, she is so over due.

I don’t see how Poehler is a factor in this race. This comes up every single year. How exactly could she take down Louis-Dreyfus?

    Poehler is a non-factor.

McCarthy and Dunham are the only ones with a chance. A lot of things would have to go wrong for JLD to lose. First, the voters would have to be fatigued or tired of her winning (probably not the case considering her speech was the highlight of the Emmys last year). Second, Tammy would have to unexpectedly garner tons of respect from the voters like Bridesmaids did. JLD beat McCarthy with a weaker submission before, so “Crate” seems like a safe bet.

Props to McCarthy for submitting an episode that puts it in doubt, though.

She likely will upset. After viewing the episodes McCarthy is now the favorite with the editors, and why shouldn’t she be? She’s funnier, more empathetic, and had zero unlikable moments – none of this can be said for JLD (especially the unlikable part). Also, if you want to bring up the chubby factor, a similarly chubby gal won for a dead father: Roseanne.

On the “editors tab” for GD, 6 editors are favoring JLD, while only 2 are picking McCarthy.

I hate to pick on Paul again, but he has McCarthy in last. Update your predix!

    Spoiler then: that’s changed. Drastically.

If she won, I would be shocked but in a good way.

For a while I thought Taylor Schilling could pull off a surprise win but that was when I thought she would submit the pilot which has great range(crying scenes drama) but I don’t see her winning for “The Chickening”

Can’t wait to see her take the stage! Go Melissa!
(And i can’t wait to see the Dreyfus fans open 10+ topics just to ask: Did Mccarthy really deserve the Emmy over Julia?)
