I’m surprised this category hasn’t been more discussed this year. I just got all the tapes on YouTube, and there is some competition this year.
Here are the nominees, plus links to their nominated routines.

Now, with my analysis:
5) Mandy Moore; So You Think You Can Dance
Her routines were very basic, and felt bland compared to the other nominees. I also felt the girls in both pieces were overacting, which totally took me out of the performances.
4) Christopher Scott; So You Think You Can Dance
These two routines were good, but they were kind of similar. I don’t expect the Academy to go for “Trigger,” which is all robotic dancing. “Sand” is interesting, but lacks impact. I might just be stringing words together, but I didn’t feel something with these routines.
3) Derek Hough; Dancing with the Stars
Hough’s routines are in a different setting and on a different program, which might mean that he wins, but the numbers are very small and aren’t very interesting. Of the three submitted, “Too Darn Hot” has the most energy and best choreography. The other two have backstories behind them, but don’t have the skill to back them up.
2) Tabitha, Napoleon Dumo; So You Think You Can Dance
These routines are a lot of fun, and they are the apples in a big group of oranges. All three are meant are comedic, and “Puttin’ on the Ritz” is the only routine in this category that goes off the stage, using the outdoors and the behind the scenes as setpieces. With so many emotional numbers in here, voters will definitely feel that these are light-hearted. They might be too whimsical for some, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they win due to their differences from the rest of the pack.
1) Travis Wall; So You Think You Can Dance
This might just be my heart talking, but I think Wall has the best group of routines in the category. “Medicine,” which deals with two brothers who are supporting each other after hitting rock bottom, really got to me and made me feel something. The backstory behind the dancers, who both recently suffered life-threatening accidents, made it even more poignant. While I don’t think “Hanging By a Thread” was particularly impressive, “Wicked Game” had good chemistry and movement. I’m not sure the Academy will go for these routines, but they certainly got to me.
I’m not an expert, unless you count watching dancing shows religiously as a qualification, but this is how I’m predicting the Choreography race.August 15, 2014 at 4:42 pm #327624
Travis Wall deserves the win after all his hard work he has done on the show and all of those dances are brillant. I however think Nappytabs are going to win especially for that one take dance which is a feat in itself.August 16, 2014 at 10:24 am #327625
Don’t forget that choreography is one of those categories that can have more than one winner – in fact, having just one winner tends to be the exception rather than the rule, although the last two years did have just one winner each (although I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to have just one winner last year as it was on the main Emmys telecast and they wouldn’t have to explain to everybody how “it’s not a tie” if two nominees both won).
