Edie Falco won the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 1999, 2001 and 2003. Allison Janney won the Emmy for Supporting Drama Actress in 2000 and 2001, and later the Emmy for Lead Drama Actress in 2002 and 2004. Both women dominated the same category for four years (2001-2004), and seemed to be the characters that voters responded to the most.
Which character did you prefer – CJ Cregg or Carmela Soprano? Which performance do you think was deserving of the most acclaim/awards? What made these characters and performances so likable and ‘awardable’ do you think? Personally, I think they’re the finest female performances in drama ever to grace our television screens, and have yet to be bettered. (Side note: I think Lorraine Bracco’s Melfi also deserves a mention, and it’s a shame she never got an Emmy for her stunning work on that show, especially in season 3).
Carmela, and it’s not even close for me. Of course, I liked The Sopranos quite a bit more than The West Wing. Don’t really get the love for Bracco, who had moments but never a legit arc and gave an overall inconsistent performance.
Carmela Soprano. Falco made this role her own and did so much more with it in such strong hands. Even though I have accepted it, Falco deserved an Emmy for “All Happy Families” over Janney’s “Access.” When predictions were being made (after everyone saw the tapes), every pundit had Falco ranked #1. It’s also hard to believe Falco wasn’t nominated in 2006, where I think her “Join the Club” episode would have trumped Hargitay’s winning submission.
This is a real dilemma. Edie Falco was absolutely amazing but Allison Janney infused her character with humor and personality. “The West Wing” was full of arrogant assholes but she was a really sympathetic character.
It’s a tie for me but when forced to choose, I would go with Janney’s CJ Cregg.
