    G’Day guys,
I brought this up last year, but since entries are due on the 3rd I thought I’d put these thoughts up again. I think Colbert should submit himself for lead actor in a comedy series, the academy should accept the submission and he could even win. I am interested in what you all think about all this so would love comments and discussion here or on the article itself.

    Here’s the case I made…

    Absolutely not.

SNL sucking up the scene in the guest categories is bad enough.

The Academy should just restore the Variety Performer category.

Exactly.  The fact that SNL hosts can get into Guest is a joke and the Emmys need to change the rules there.  I love Colbert, but no.

    G’Day,
I do agree that they should reinstate the variety performer category (or introduce a variety series host category).

However it seems if a Bill Hader/Kristen Wiig/Amy Poehler could get nominated for supporting actor why shouldn’t a Stephen Colbert get into the lead category.

And for mind he gives a much stronger acting performance than many of the names in contention.

Colbert Report isn’t a sitcom; it’s a variety series.  I know the depth in lead actor comedy in question is thin, but there are better places to look.

On Wikipedia, they say that Stephen Colbert actually plays a character by the same name on the show. This alone should make him eligible for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

SNL is also not a sitcom and we have actors from that show nominated every year. IF they are allowed in the supporting category there is no reason I can see why Colbert shouldn’t be allowed in lead actor, as a matter of fairness. I agree a host category is the ideal place but until that’s rectified this is the place for him.

Larry David plays a character with the same name on the show and has been nominated 5 times in that category. Jerry Seinfeld is another example. Sarah Silverman has in the lead actress category as well.

It would irk me, too, but if “SNL” supporting players and hosts get in, then Colbert should qualify. He would be nominated but he would not win. This is a voting body that likes schtick and broad humor, not subtlety (at least not in the comedy categories).

    Tricky.

Normally I would say no, but Colbert is a special case. His ability to maintain his sarcastic facade while interviewing guests is a modern miracle.

    Pros:

    • His role if far more complex than any other variety performer and it could easily fail if it wasn’t for his extraordinarily quick wit
    • Stephen would like another award so we should probably give it to him

    Cons:

    • How do you compare someone like Colbert with an actor in a traditional comedy? By a single episode? By overall achievement?
    • Wouldn’t it be better to resurrect the retired award for “Individual Performance in a Variety or Musical Program” than to bend the definition of the Comedy Lead Actor award?

Stephen Colbert does shows almost every weeknight every year and is one of the hardest working men in comedy lately. The SNL people have 21 – 22 episodes a year and have regular breaks between every two or three shows. If anyone deserves an Emmy for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, it is definitely Colbert. He is funnier than Jim Parsons (who’s shtick is getting old now), Jon Cryer and even Don Cheadle. Colbert needs to be rewarded for The Colbert Report in a major way (and face it, the Daily Show is going to go on winning Variety Series for eternity), so awarding him Lead Actor in a Comedy Series is an excellent way of rewarding him

Yes, but how does Colbert submit? And is it fair to him to compete with actors playing roles on tv sitcoms that have character development and emotional moments?
