I know there was a thread re Jim Parsons possibly winning a fourth Emmy, but this is a general thread for this year’s Comedy Lead Actor race.

    The nominees:
    Louis CK, Louie (Episode: “Model”)
Don Cheadle, House of Lies (Episode: “Wreckage”)
Ricky Gervais, Derek (Episode: “Episode 2.06”)
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes (Episode: “Episode Six”)
William H. Macy, Shameless (Episode: “Lazarus”)
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory (Episode: “The Relationship Diremption”)

I’m on the fence about this category. I think it ultimately comes down to Parsons vs Gervais. Parsons seems to be the odd one out in this dramatic category as the bold, funny, colorful character. Gervais would normally be thought of as this type of character but his Derek is quite understated at times, and the show carries a weird type of humor… Parsons should be winning purely because it’s a comedy actor category, but Gervais is a serious threat I think. LeBlanc has his best shot here with a funny enough episode, but I think he falls under the theory that Emmy voters are loathe to give trophies to people playing themselves, or versions of themselves.

Thank you for creating this thread. I just finished watching the six tapes. Thoughts:

    • The most impressive performance goes to Ricky Gervais. Wasn’t expecting it to be so funny, sweet and emotional. It stayed with me for a long time. He was dead funny too in a way that I’ve never seen before so I hope Ricky wins. He’s just too good to ignore.
    • William H. Macy was amazing but his character is so unlikeable. And trust me, I love villiains and hateable characters but Frank is just hedious. Outstanding performance but not everyone’s cup of tea. I doubt he wins.
    • I think I was rooting for Matt LeBlanc to win it but his tape is so… boring? I’d go further and say it’s completely dull and boring. Episodes was never exciting or appealing but ut has its nice moments. Too bad Episode 6 has none.
    • I’m so annoyed with Don Cheadle’s nomination. He’s such a filler nominee it’s actually irritating. I can’t believe people like Thomas Middleditch, Adam Scott or even Jonathan Groff got overlooked for this nothing performance in a dead show.
    • Louie is a better writer than actor and that’s all I have to say about his submission.
    • Jim Parsons’s submission… I wish I could get those 30 minutes back. Awful all the way through. I actually hate myself for forcing myself to watch that crap.

I thought I was torn between LeBlanc and Macy but having watched all the tapes, I’m fully rooting for Gervais.

Gervais is a lock. If people keep voting for persons because they find his drunk acting really funny the thanksgiving episode was far better. The drunkeness went on far longer and was funnier. Gervais is just a lock.

IMHO…Louie CK and LeBlanc will not win for playing themselves.  William H. Macy should not win for Shameless.  As much as I admire him, jumping categories because you cannot garner any awards as a drama, should not earn you an award for lead actor in the comedy category. Shameless is not a comedy and neither is OITNB, but whatever. Ricky Gervasis is the wild card, but as talented as he is, he is in a small show and is polarizing (Golden Globes hosting, do the academy voters have short memories?). Parsons will win his fourth Emmy.  The character has shown great growth, especialy in this past season.  But it is so hip and cool to hate on TBBT and Parsons, that the voters may go for a “niche” show or performance instead, rating and popular opinion be dammed.

come on people, TBBT is not that bad. it’s actually disgusting to see people trying to be “cool” by hating anything that’s popular.

I see no way Ricky Gervais does not repeat to a surprise win just like he did in 2007 for EXTRAS a show that not too many watched this show DEREK which I love is probably seen by less but is a more rangeful performance than the rest and is so sweet and emotional and charming. I can’t see him losing.

I would love to see Matt LeBlanc’s name called, but he submitted by far the worst episode of the season, even though he was great in it.

I got to agree with you on that, it is annoying when someone hates on a show just because it is popular. But I think TBBT is sooo unfunny. Popular or not.

Cut me some slack. I’ve never been a fan of multi-camera shows. I hate most of them, if not ALL of them. The Big Bang Theory is not an exception. I’ve been watching a couple of episodes each and every year and I stand by my opinion: it’s awful. The jokes are obvious and repetitive most of the time and the acting is not that great. I think Jim Parsons is insanely talented but his Sheldon-schtick is growing tired.

And I don’t give a fart about a show’s popularity. That doesn’t work as a barometer to me. I watch what I like and what interests me and The Big Bang Theory does not fit in those categories. I’m sorry of you find that disgusting but that’s your problem, not mine.

    I find TBBT completely dull and unfunny and don’t get why Jim Parsons has won Emmys for it. (However, he richly deserves his other Emmy nomination this year, for his sensitive performance in The Normal Heart). Matt LeBlanc playing a character named Matt LeBlanc, who isn’t actually himself, is interesting, but I find the show itself annoying. Why do they keep on nominating Don Cheadle when that slot could go to someone who has comedic talent? Louie leaves me cold; I never laugh. Shameless is a drama series… so that leaves Ricky Gervais, and I am hoping he wins for Derek (: He’s funny, sweet, and he gives great acceptance speeches! (;

Why do you assume people hate it because it’s popular? Have you considered that some people might not like it because they don’t consider it to be good?

    Gervais is winning.

His performance is too good to ignore.

Gervais could win, but not because he’s too good to ignore. Lots of performances are too good to be ignored, and they still lose (or worse, don’t even get nominated). Being the best doesn’t mean you will automatically win. The winner will most likely be Parsons again.
