Seeing as how Netflix is really in vogue right now with their vast array of original T.V. shows (a lot of which are quite good), I got to thinking.

Could a show like American Idol or The Voice concievably work on Netflix in any way?

    Discuss.

Hmm, that would be an interesting prospect, and I can certainly see something along the lines of a Amazing Race or Hells Kitchen working. Something that doesn’t require as much participation. I don’t know if they would take that risk of requiring participation, so I’m going to say it won’t happen.

I don’t think a singing show could work but other ones could. Basically anything without audience voting.

I think that a singing/talent show could work if they have a way for the viewers on Netflix to may go to a website and vote, maybe, but have like no time limit like overnight voting, but instead like have weeklong voting as that enough people can do it.

    Just a thought.

On the voting front, it’d probablly work best if the eliminations were decided in the same way that RuPaul’s Drag Race or America’s Next Top Model are.

I watch ANTM and am curious if you meant the judges or the online voting thing.

Because of Netflix’s viewer model of season-dumping its contents all at once, I don’t think any kind of public voting could work for a Reality/Competition Program. It would have to be something like “Survivor” or “The Amazing Race” (and I’m sort of surprised we haven’t seen a bunch of viable knockoffs of these shows over the years) where the contestants are eliminated by judges or panels. This wouldn’t work for the singing competition shows like “The Voice” and “American Idol” where audience participation is key.

Didn’t BoJack Horseman release a new episode of the first season months after airing all the other episodes? Just saying.

My question is if they can’t work in the traditional, is there any way to make something like that work on Netflix?

It should work fine. At some point Netflix will have to stop releasing all episodes at once, and since we’re talking about reality shows, specially if they’re fan voted, that would be a good place to start. Even if the release model keeps being the rule at Netflix, they’re doing Chelsea Handler’s show now, I can’t imagine them releasing a bunch of episodes at once if we’re talking about a standard talk show or late night show. So maybe for a reality show they’ll do the same.

They clearly want to become a regular channel/network at least in terms of content, so the day for a Netflix Reality Show can’t be that far down the line.

On the other hand they’re doing pretty well with their shows, while reality shows are flopping one after the next. So maybe they’ll just stay away from these shows.

If that would work, Mindy Kaling’s statement at the Emmys would have been confirmed
“Reality shows aren’t just the thing you insist your husband watch with you before you have sex with him”

Just don’t do a fan-voted elimination show, like I stated. There’s no reason Netflix can’t have a Reality/Competition Series within their own user model. They could even release the episodes in batches to keep the suspense going instead of all at once.

yeah, i think those shows that doesn’t require audience participation will work. if they can get the rights for the mole and revive it, that would be so good!

I keep thinking about this question again and again and it has been a few years, so I wonder if this could still happen?

I thought maybe the people of Netflix could have a thing after the episode has aired which is a sort of poll of which contestant to vote for and it will stop after like a period of time and never be displayed again. After a week or so, they eliminate the person or persons with the fewest number of votes and continue with that until they have a winner. I am not a programmer so I don’t know if that is feasible, but if it is, that would be really interesting.

Pretty sure this is already happening. Netflix teamed up with Stallone for an athletic reality competition show which I believe is set to debut this month.

No audience participation to my knowledge though.
