Kyra Sedgwick won the award for Drama Lead Actress back in 2010, but was shockingly snubbed of a nomination last year. So, I was wondering, could she come back and score a nomination again this year? So far, I think things are working in her favor.

Look at her competition. Julianna Margulies, Claire Danes, and Elisabeth Moss are the only safe bets to return this year. Fresh off an Academy Award nomination, Glenn Close also has a strong chance of coming back. That leaves two more slots left. Who else is even close to a nomination? Mireille Enos’ show has lost all of its buzz it had from last year. Kathy Bates’ show was just canceled, which is the kiss of death in terms of nominations at the Emmy’s. Mariska Hargitay could get in, though her show was almost canceled this year after the severe loss of quality and ratings after Chris Meloni’s exit.

Also, the Emmy’s have a history of giving someone an award, snubbing them the next year, then nominating them again. Examples:

*Felicity Huffman won in 2005, snubbed in 2006, nominated again in 2007.
*James Gandolfini won in 2001, snubbed in 2002, nominated (and won) again in 2003.
*Eric McCormack won in 2001, snubbed in 2002, nominated again in 2003.
*Edie Falco won in 2001, snubbed in 2002, nominated again in 2003.
*Allison Janney won in 2004, snubbed in 2005, nominated again in 2006

So, with all of this in mind, could Kyra Sedgwick come back and be nominated again this year?

I think Sedwick is safe for the 5th spot (the first three locks being Danes/Margulies/Moss then Close in a solid 4th) and I have an out of nowhere nom getting the 6th spot, hopefully Katey Sagal or Emmy Rossum. Enos is out, as are Bates and, at last (fingers crossed) Hargitay is as well. Wishful thinking on my part perhaps but it’s now or never for Sagal. Connie Britton finally got in for her fourth season and I’m hoping Sagal is no different.

Her snub wasn’t that much of a shock. It’s been considered a strong possibility.
I think she could definitely come back, it’s the final season of The Closer afterall, isn’t it? And I’d take her over Hargitay and Bates any time, so hopefully it’s happening.

You can add Patricia Arquette (won in 05, snubbed in 06, back in 07) to the list, though 2006 was really a crazy year for the Emmys. Uhm, from the looks of it she’s back. I have her in my sixth spot just above Bates and Sagal in 8th. Margulies-Danes-Moss-Close-Hargitay as the first five in that order.

    .
*James Gandolfini won in 2001, snubbed in 2002, nominated (and won) again in 2003.
*Edie Falco won in 2001, snubbed in 2002, nominated again in 2003.

They were not snubbed since The Sopranos was ineligible in 2002. And Falco also won in 2003.

I think they deliberately dropped Sedgwick last year after her win in 2010, so she won’t be back. If she’s nominated this year, it might mean that last year’s snub was simply a mistake.

The Closer still has six episodes left in 2012 as transitional episodes into its spin-off, Major Crimes. These episodes are eligible for Emmy 2013, so if Sedgwick is still part of it (is she?), she will still have a shot next year, not as strong as before though. What’s more interesting is whether Mary McDonnell, who was nominated as a guest actress in 2011 and is a lead actress of the spin-off, will be a strong contender come 2013.

Sedgwick can get back in this year, and if she doesn’t manage a nod, she has one more chance left for next year’s cycle.

I’m tired to pray for an Hargitay snub. I fully expect to see her on the list along with Margulies, Close, Danes and Moss. Not sure about 6th slot, but I think it’s between Sedgwick and Bates.

Of course Emmy Rossum and Katey Sagal should be nominated.

I thought it was possible some months ago. Now not so much. There’s four almost sewn-up spots. Sedgwick will have to take out Bates, Hargitay, Rossum, Enos and the two chicks from ‘Downton”. Could happen, but I just think voters have moved on. That category would have had to empty out for Sedgwick to return, which hasn’t happened.

    Current predictions:
    (in order of most likely)

    Julianna Margulies
Claire Danes (SAG snub makes me think she is no lock)
    Elisabeth Moss
    Glenn Close
    Elizabeth McGovern
    Mariska Hargitay

    7th: Kathy Bates
    8th: Kyra Sedgwick

Hargitay will likely be nominated yet again. Sedgwick is fighting for that last spot with Bates, McGovern and Enos, though I do think that Sedgwick gets it simply because of how weak the competition is.

I agree with your statement, sort of. The competition is weak in terms of the Emmys. Imagine how exciting this category would be if it finally acknowledged great performers who can’t get in plus reigning champs and nominees. There’s Julianna Margulies, defending her title. Then Glenn Close, back in the club and fresh off an Oscar nomination. Newcomer Claire Danes, who’s been nominated in this category once before and also won for Temple Grandin a few years ago. Now throw in the likes of Emmy Rossum and Katey Sagal. As for the sixth spot, probably Elisabeth Moss. If those six – Close, Danes, Margulies, Moss, Rossum, and Sagal – were nominated and submitted their best (they all have at least two episodes) this would be one of the most exciting categories of the night.

But alas, I expect the usual suspects, the only new blood being Danes. It’s too bad. This category has the potential to be the most exciting of the four drama series acting categories yet it’s always the most boring and bland in terms of its nominations.

That list would be amazing Morgan!! Katey Sagal being nominated would make me do a roundoff. Even if season two was her best.

No and I don’t think the Patricia Arquette example works in this scenario either. That was a different time in TV and how they voted. They have simply moved on and I would be shocked if she were to make it back in.

I’m tired to pray for an Hargitay snub.

I know people tired of her, but how many of the ” snub prayers” watch her show for real? I think none of them.
I think Mariska Hargitay’s performance is still one of the gratest dramatic performance on television. Much better than some of the fully hyped women out there. I’m not sure about her nomination this year, but would it be worthy? Yes. Definitely.

Btw, we have Jessica Pare, too. I don’t think that Kyra will come back.

My current prediction for the nomination:

    1. Julianna Margulies
    2. Claire Danes
    3. Glenn Close
    4. Elisabeth Moss
    5. Jessica Pare
    6. Mariska Hargitay (not sure)

    7. Elizabeth McGovern
    8. Kathy Bates
    9. Mireille Enos
    10. Kyra Sedgwick

    11. Katey Segal
    12. Emmy Rossum
    13. Debra Messing

It’s true, I’m not a regular watcher of the show.
But I watch every year her submission and I don’t see anything worthy. Or better, you can’t be nominated 8 consecutive years for the exact same performance when we had in those 8 years several amazing performances unable to enter the race once (Mary McDonnell for Battlestar Galctica, Calista Flockhart for Brothers & Sisters, Jeanne Tripplehorn for Big Love…)
