As I was reading through this years contenders, I cam across this series listed with the contenders for Outstanding Limited Series. As someone who watched this program, I was pleasently surprised by this. I then went to look in the performers lists but none of the cast were submitted. It aired on Logo between April 13 and June 1.
The series description provided in the contention list is:
CUCUMBER explores 21st century gay life in all its powerful, witty, dark and uplifting guises. Eight episodes explore the lives and misadventures of Henry Best and his long-suffering boyfriend Lance. After a disastrous date night, Henry’s life shatters, and he embarks on a new life with unfamiliar rules.
Did anyone else watch this? Thoughts?June 24, 2015 at 4:43 am #351526
I watched it, it was…interesting.
I’m not surprised none of the actors have been submitted, there wasn’t exactly a stand out performance, although Cyril Nri is the closest to that. The main character was very annoying, as were his two flatmates. Lance was the best of them all, but even his story was a bit annoying, with his obsession with his co-worker. I watched a couple episodes of Banana, which was a spin-off of this, which ties in with the main series for a few seconds each episode, but focuses on separate stories. Even the characters there felt annoying.
In most shows stuffed with annoying characters, there is at least one glimmer of hope with a charatcer. Here, I cannot think of a single character that I either related to, or liked. Admittedly, I’m not gay, so relating to any character in this show is limited by that, when the sexuality and sex is one of the biggest things about each character.
I didn’t love the show, I didn’t hate it. I thought it was good. Not surprised Davis has said that this is a one story and done series. I could not think of any where this show could go after the ‘first’ series.

Yeah was a little odd was Cucumber. The fact that I could not stand nearly all the characters didn’t help, although as AMG said Cyril Nri was very good, as was Julie Hesmondhalgh. If Cryril Nri was on the ballot though he’d get my vote for a nomination.June 24, 2015 at 5:26 am #351528
The sixth episode is worthy of a honorable mention. Other than that, the show overall was a disappointment for me.June 24, 2015 at 9:00 am #351529
“Cucumber” was a very peculiar series, but I liked it. Vincent Franklin should be on the Emmy ballot. It’s very unfortunate that he isn’t. The more impressive work was the companion series, “Banana,” which were half-hour explorations of the side characters done concurrently with the main plotlines of the hourlong “Cucumber.” They covered some devastating topics concerning modern gay life in Britain. I hope these two series reach a broader audience on Netflix or Amazon and show the content unedited. LOGO edited the hell out of these shows, and I hated that. What’s the point of basic cable if it does that? I wasn’t expecting premium channel explicitness, but even stations like f[X], AMC, and Comedy Central have been known to be less strident than LOGO’s content restrictions. It’s probably for the best that this is a one-and-done series. I’d recommend seeing both works.
