Deadline is reporting that ABC has picked up a series by David O. Russell and Susannah Grant straight to series for 13 episodes. The show will be an upstairs/downstairs soap at a private country club. Think it will work and maybe win some Emmys?

The premise doesn’t interest me that much. Depends on the cast.

Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Melissa Leo would be great. 😉

Well, I will automatically be watching this.

Prepare for dialogue overlap, quirky characters and ACTING~! I am very excited for this…

This sounds boring, predictable and annoying. Basically, a typical David O. Russell project.

I don’t think this is a good match for David’s voice. He needs cable for his vision to thrive and this premise, typical modern day ABC, will not provide him that outlet. I am speaking in absolutes and on first impressions, but that is how I feel. And on the flip, maybe he’ll be able to bring some prestige to the ABC primetime soap formula. If Jacki Weaver wasn’t doing “Gracepoint” I could see a scenario of him using her as matriarch.

In short, posibilities, but I am wary.

Would you prefer an alien descend upon the country club and impregnate all of the members? That would be unpredictable, but not neccesarily good.

People always complain shows are predictable b/c they cover topics previously covered. But why can’t a unique approach to previously-broached affairs be appreciated? Upstairs/downstairs has been done. But it could still be unique, and maybe have some unpredictability (sans extra-terrestrials).

I agree an unique take on something that has been done to death can be refreshing. That’s just never the case with David O. Russell.

And honestly, hell yeah, an alien impregnanting everyone in a country club sounds funnier and more entertaining than anything Russell has done the past few years.

I can’t wait for it to be nominated in all four acting categories!

But seriously, I’m definitely intrigued though I agree with 24Emmy that a good-to-great cast is necessary.

    Agreed with all of this.

This series would need him directing for it to actually feel like it has the David O. Russell stamp on it.  It sounds like he will only be co-writing the pilot.
