I was interested in knowing, what do people think are good submissions for Directing for a Comedy Series. It doesn’t have to be who they think will be nominated, but what are some good submissions?

I bet Lena Dunham goes with “One Man’s Trash” and that’s a great submission IMO.

^ Lena Dunham didn’t direct that episode. She only wrote it, but if it gets nominated, and wins, it would make a standout winner.

Oh, you’re right, my mistake! For some reason I had it in my head she wrote and directed that one, but she did direct way less episodes this season than in the first. On that note, my guess is she submits “Together,” but “One Man’s Trash” is a better winner IMO. Does anyone know what episodes HBO sent out in their FYC package?

Five episodes from five different shows come to mind:
    1)Go On, “Pilot”
2)Parks and Rec. , “Leslie and Ben”
    3)Glee, “Lights Out”
4)It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, “The Gang Dines Out”
    5) 30 Rock, “Last Lunch”

Louie “New Year’s Eve” or “Late Show” (if they’ll let him submit all three as one)
    The Office “Finale”
Parks and Recreation “Are You Better Off?”
    30 Rock “Last Lunch”

    FX campaign set arrived today.

The directing episode being submitted for Louis C.K. is “Daddy’s Girlfriend, Part 1”.

Wow. That’s a weak submission when you have “Late Show” and “New Year’s Eve”. The directing on that episode is so… okay. Damn, C.K., why are you leaving out the best episodes of the season?

Besides the typical being more right than Renaton, I also take some pleasure in Louie’s submissions. I would have preferred “New Year’s Eve”, but submitting the last part of a singular story arc is risky. After the finale “Daddy’s Girlfriend Part l” is the most director-y episode. It has a fair amount of wide appeal. It’s a good episode, and it works as a short film. Louie’s writing and directing submissions aren’t nearly as loopy as out there as they could have been, and they would be worthy winners.

Of course you were right, I didn’t think Louis C.K. would get it wrong

Daddy’s Girlfriend Pt. 1 is a good episode, but not much of a directing showcase. It has those little vignettes of him fantasizing the female teachers with the vampy music on the background and that’s it. He is gonna compete with shows with much bigger and more elaborate visual comedy and quite stylized as well . This category, more than writing and even acting, is where he needs to submit the absolute best and showiest. In that sense, it’s a weak submission, since it’s one where the writing is stronger than the direction, unlike something like “New Year’s Eve”, where the directing is clearly the best thing (and one of the best episodes of the show on the strength of that mostly, although the writing is really good), or “Late Show Pt. 3”, which clearly demanded more effort.
