At the Emmys, nominees must submit an episode for their consideration to The Academy. For the most part, episodes do matter. But, sometimes, they don’t. What do you guys think?

I think you are exactly right. Tapes matter until they don’t.

But I’d say if you’re ever in doubt err on the side of tapes mattering.

Everybody – Please stop using the word “tapes”. You sound like either of my grandmothers.

I would like to say that tapes matter, but there are also other factors that come into play.

I can’t remember the poster’s name, but they shared feedback from their friends that are Emmy voters and the rationale was quite interesting to say the least.  I do not remember tapes being mentioned that often during their analysis.

I also remember that some voters said that they vote for their friends (i.e. Patricia Heaton)

It is a luck of the draw if the tapes land in the hands of voters that would watch the tapes or voters that vote based on other reasons.

I like “tapes”.  I feel like it has become part of the Emmy vernacular and no longer refers to a physical videotape, but something along the lines of “nominee’s submitted episode”.

    “Tapes” 4-EVA!

There have been enough wins over the years that make me believe that tapes matter. At least in the acting categories.

That’s a perfect way to say it. Tapes are just one of the many factors that can contribute to a win, but they are usually the biggest one. It’s only when all the other factors work in the favor of another nominee that tapes start to not matter (cough cough Maggie Smith cough) , which I would say doesn’t happen more often than it does

    Yes and no.

I suggest that instead of “tapes” we call them receipts.

It’s just not the same to refer to them as “DVDs”.

Not always *cough FalcoLouis-DreyfusClose cough*. Their name reputations help them win just as much.  We’ll see that from JLD Sunday when she wins Best Comedy Actress again.

Sure they matter…unless you’re Maggie Smith.

I’m sorry, but how many times are we going to make a thread about the SAME argument? I swear there was a thread here just a few days ago that dealt with the SAME exact issue?

It’s also interesting to note that the same episode can be viewed completely differently by different people. I loved Kristin Wiig’s submission and thought it was the best of the bunch, but I know a lot of people thought the opposite. Personally I think that Anna Gunn gave the best performance of 2012/2013 for “Fifty-One,” but she has a lot of haters out there who may not want to vote for her, sadly.
