I have been asking myself this ever since I started watching the show. He shares a lot of autistic traits, to the point of where I think he does actually have it, also the creators have never said so.
What do you think?
My mother is a developmental pediatricion and she is obsessed with that show, and she has said that he exhibits a lot of symptoms of having Aspergers. Technically aspergers is not a diagnosis anymore, so she does say that if she were to treat him she would diagnose him as being on the low end of the autism specturm.
When he says his mother had him “tested” and it was “negative” maybe they mean autism or anything .
He does has symptoms of aspergers, not autism, but still doesn´t have either. Of course it has to do with the sitcomy style his character is written, but still, if he had it, he wouldn´t be able to function and behave in many ways he does.
It’s a cartoonish cariacture of Asperger’s.
There was never any doubt in my mind that Sheldon is on the spectrum.
Okay, just to tell you, I myself have autism, and I know from years of having it and from my mother being a self-proclaimed spokesperson for it that aspergers is in the autism spectrum. It’s like a wide umbrella. Some could be affected greatly and others not as much.
My theory as to why Sheldon may not be like this is because the writers are probably afraid that if they flat-out say he does have autism or aspbergers, then they would probably get some hate mail from people who actually have it and watch the show, because Sheldon is a bit of a jerk at times. So to save the trouble, the writers never say officially that he does or doesn’t have it.
I think that as a joke for the final episode it is revealed that he does have it, and that Leonard and Howard and others are going to be like “Ohhh! That explains a lot.”
When he says his mother had him “tested” and it was “negative” maybe they mean autism or anything.
Sheldon’s mother also said that the test wasn’t legitimate or something. I don’t remember it exactly, but it is said in at least one episode that that happened.
