Last night at the WGA Awards, Veep bested Parks and Rec, Modern Family, 30 Rock, and the super buzzed about Orange is the New Black for Best Written Comedy Series on its first nomination in the category. (Last year, it lost to Girls for New Series.) Veep has yet to be nominated in the Comedy Writing Race at the Emmys. Does it need to be nominated there for a chance of winning Comedy Series? How are its chances now?

Yes I believe it’s chances have improved now, so, season 3 could easily (depending on it’s quality) get nominated there, it should’ve been nominated with Hostages or Vic Allen Dinner last year.

Like any show, unless it gets a writing or directing nomination I don’t consider it a threat to win, but it’ll probably get into one or both of those categories this year.

Definitely gets it more chances for the writing category, but as far as the Comedy big award itself I’m not sure. Louie will be back, Modern Family is the usual juggernaut and TBBT has tons of buzz as usual.

Well it shows writer support at least. That, coupled with its Emmy wins for JLD and Tony Hale last year in acting make it a huge contender to be the successor to Modern Family. I think it’ll always have the problem of being too cynical and heartless though. But it is very topical and relevant to what’s going on in government today so it has a good chance of upsetting Modern Family finally.

I’d be a little more confident if it managed to win the PGA but if it has a really stellar third season then watch out.

Well, it doesn’t hurt its chances. It shows broader support than what we thought the show had. The acting branch obviously embraced, having two wins last year. The only problem the show has right now is sticking with fewer submissions, so its chances of a episodic nomination at the Emmys are better.

MF fatigue is being shown slowly, and I believe Veep is becoming the best alternative. It’s not in any way a frontrunner, but the chances are better than the other comedy shows out there.

Yes, it certainly helps them. They can accomplish a comedy series win with a few steps:

    1. Have a season on par or better than the second season
    2. Get all three acting nominations again
    3. Submit only two (including the finale) episodes for writing and directing
    4. Reap writing and directing nods
    5. Hope MF gets snubbed in directing
    6. Victory

But yeah, I’d say they are still the underdog. I love that there are so many people on here pulling for the show…

Very exciting victory for Veep; this is their first Best Comedy win at any awards show, right?

Obviously, the quality of the third season will have the most impact on its chances at the Emmy Awards, and sight-unseen it’s hard to truly comment on whether it has a better shot than last year.  Assuming the quality of the series does not dip, I think it’s pretty clear that this win certainly won’t hurt it at all!  Perhaps this helps it secure a Writing nomination next year, assuming HBO doesn’t submit too many episodes.  Other than that, I think it’s hard to say this helps it in the Series race.

It’s just nice they finally picked up a Best Comedy win somewhere!

It won Program of the Year at the 2014 AFI, but it’s not really considered a best comedy award, right? It was the only comedy to get in, though (considering Orange Is The New Black sticks in the drama race).

Veep made the AFI Top 10 Programs of the year, but I wasn’t aware that they named a Program of the Year. Do they?

Well , I don’t think Veep will win Comedy Series this soon, in my opinion , at this next emmys this time, nothing can stop Big Bang Theory, maybe Brookylin 99, Louie is cursed so.

Yes, they name the top 10 programs. According to the Hollywood Reporter, they held some sort of ceremony to award the 10 “winners”. Veep was the only comedy on the list. That’s what I meant with not really considered a best comedy award.

I would have agreed with you before it lost everything…

Cursed? It’s just not conventional enough to win series.

Any award win for any show contending for series will help them out. But I don’t think we’ll know anything about anything when to comes to this year’s comedy series race until the nominations. Whether there’s a dip in Modern Family’s nods or Veep and TBBT breaking into writing and/or directing or B99 showing up in few major categories it’s impossible to gage this race until the nods are released.

Since the quality of the show is increasing nonstop and with all the success on ratings, well, I think it is time it wins comedy series and I believe it would be more fair than a B99 win for it’s debut season, still prefer Louie to win because it is just brilliant and that is hard to find nowadays.
