I feel very strongly about this. If Emmy voters know that an actor or actress won’t show up to the ceremony, like Maggie Smith (“Downton Abbey”), then they shouldn’t give them a trophy. Give it to someone else who WILL likely be there.

Do you agree? Or am I evil for saying something negative about the Dame? Sound off!

I agree and you’re not saying anything negative about her. Honestly, she probably has so many trophies at this point, I doubt she even cares about winning any more at this point in her career.

She doesn’t even deserve to be nominated.

Really? This is a thread? This is a ridiculous argument that has been mentioned way too many times and I can’t believe the simple fact of “this woman is way too old to be traveling for an award” ins’t enough of an excuse. A lot of people haven’t shown up to collect awards and nobody says anything. Yet the 80 something woman who lives like 10 hours away by plane doesn’t deserve an Emmy (that she’s not sure will be hers) because she won’t show up.

Of course she doesn’t deserve an Emmy, she hasn’t deserved one since it was a miniseries and maybe not even then, but not “because she won’t show up”.

Apparently a memo was sent to certain people to open as many threads as you can this week because it’s been crazy for the last two days, starting with those Caitlin Jenner and Donald Trump threads. I’m guessing the “Bennedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman – Give back your Emmys because you didn’t show up last year” thread is coming up.

If a beloved elderly actress is unwilling to fly halfway across the world so we can freeze frame the moment she loses an Emmy and see if we can spot some emotion, so be it. The reality is that she is a great actress. We are not going to see genuine emotion; rather, we will probably only see severe jet lag.

But to carry your idea forward, let’s put veteran TV character actress Hawaii Five-0‘s Grace Park up for the award instead. Born and raised in LA with 15 years of supporting roles in a few assorted, long running drama series, Ms. Park could use the recognition of a major award. She’s likely to show up. Nominate her. Awards should be about the promotion of a product. Sell a show and raise ratings.

I do not subscribe to such a cynical view. A number of us who spend time here on GoldDerby believe that recognition in the arts has value. Celebrating the best promotes creativity and perhaps prompts additional work that we will find enriches our lives. So much of the posting here focuses on poor decisions and who truly deserved that adulation.

Finally, if Dame Maggie Smith is so outstanding that she can allow her work to stand for itself and have her trophy shipped to her, good for her!

Isn’t this argued about every damn year, sometimes twice when SAG comes around?

And not to be an a-hole but claiming someone shouldn’t vote for a performance they feel is awards worthy because they fear the actor won’t show up is silly, especially when that actor is 80. Isn’t this supposed to be about celebrating work not speeches and fashion moments? Thinking she doesn’t deserve a nod based on her work and other potential nominees is a completely different argument.

I have to agree with others that because someone can’t or is unwilling to attend an award should be passed over because of it is a horrible concept. Awards should be based off of merit which many will agree that she shouldn’t be nominated in the first place but like with all art it is subjective. You will not find a single contender every person supports. I think Downton Abbey is not what it used to be. I did find Maggie Smith worthy of a nomination this year over the previous years. We all have wins and nominations we don’t think should ever happen but I think that is the fun in awards and predicting. Are the voters actually voting based off of name? Yes…that most likely is helping her but we have seen the Emmys leave other big names off in the past but who cares if they can attend,,,just to sit there and lose.

I agree with the thread and the factt that we keep talking about this year after year, cause maybe someone will one day hear us and let her go already!

Imo, she hasn’t deserved a single nomination for this show, and Im talking sag, globe, emmys, nothing, other than ensemble at sag. Now to be able to actually say she has won multiple of those over the years is baffling. Sorry, I have bothing against her as an actress at all, but I can’t get over the morronic name checking she’s gotten for Downton abbey. If there is a performances there actually worth a supporting price before all her competitors, specially the leads in sag, I sure as hell haven’t seen it.

    Haha Im done, sorry.

I don’t watch Downton Abbey but everyone keeps saying this season she’s been amazing, if that is true than she deserves to be nominated, with Anna Gunn out of the race it will be hard for the rest to beat her though. Also next year will be Downton Abbey’s last so I don’t see what’s so important about her getting nominated or snubbed, she has one more year of getting rubberstamped then I don’t think she’ll do another TV series tbh.

If that’s the case, than please: Emmys, DO NOT nominate Amy Poehler, Christine Baranski and Sarah Paulson, the 3 serial name checking place holders!

    – They take up nomination spots that could be given to actual competitive actresses, and previous winners.
    – They take up presenting slots that can be given to actual winners or respected actresses,
    – And they take up chair space in the auditorium!!!

Enough with these perennial nominees that have no purpose whatsoever , no Emmy, no chance of an Emmy, and who fill slots.

I wanted to ask this exact same question, but i was scared to. I just couldn’t handle another attack.

It’s like all hell has broken lose on these forums. The number of threads being created and aimed at certain shows, perfomances. You don’t even have to guess which actors/shows are getting these thread treatment.

    Like seriously.

I am expecting a few dosen more threads in favour of Transparent, Jeffrey Tambor, Jon Hamm, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski,  Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Mad Men and Orange is The New Black to pop up until next week.

And then a few more snide, negative commentary threads about Downton Abbey, The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family and Jim Parsons to materialize. Just to further alienate/discourage fans of these shows on these boards.

Apparently there are Emmy voters who read Gold Derby. You know what is up.

And by the way they’re phrased I know it’s either Marcus or Paul Sheehan because they’re usually accusatory or taking some actor or film or performance that we know has a big following on these boards (or we know people have big opinions about them) and just kicking an old hornet’s nest like this one. Like seriously are you guys hourly? Or is ad revenue down and we need to start clicking on stuff?

Everyone has it the nail on the head. You couldn’t tell me shit if I were someone of Dame Maggie’s caliber. She doesn’t owe anyone an appearance at these events, nor does anyone. And the logic of someone not showing up = don’t reward them is stupid.
