I know in USA the show does not come back to January 6th but in UK is comes back tonight for a full 10 weeks. Tonights episode is our first introduction to Shirley MacLaine as Cora’s mother, seeing her and smith go at it will be so funny. A producer of the show said this season would feature “A BIRTH, A DEATH AND A WEDDING”.

It returns on ITV1 at 9:00p.m. for 10 weeks.

I am hoping PBS starts airing this at the same time next season, b/c it’s a hit now so this should happen.

This isn’t available online anywhere (legally) is it? I figured no, but hope springs eternal.

I also felt the episode was a B+! There were some shaky bits, notably anything involving Thomas, O’Brien’s nephew, and spiked drinks, but overall it was solid. After hating on series 2 so much, I’m happy to be back supporting this show (at least for now). I also agree that Dockery was MVP, but IMO she by far gives the best performance (yes even better than Dame Maggie Smith), so I might be biased. Do you mind some notes on your review? If not, sorry. The marriage is between Mary and Matthew, not Mary and Thomas lol. Commercial flight was not common place at this point, so I think we can assume Branson and Sybil took a ship. That is all!

Good review…but next time, you should consider making paragraphs. This huge chunk of text isn’t easy on  the eyes…

I think it was a step up from season two. I loved the sweet moment with Lord Grantham and Carson looking at Mary come down the stairs. Also, Mrs. Patmore and Daisy and the whole Branson thing.

I did however not like Mary and Matthew’s feud at all. Definitely rich people’s problems. I completely sided with Matthew on that particular argument and thought Mary came across as a brat.

I don’t understand the hate for the Mary/Matthew fight. Such a disagreement is completely in character for both, and the scene were supurbly acted by Dockery. It is clear to most of the audience that Matthew was right here, yet with her performance she was able to make us understand how she might think this is the right thing to do. While I do agree that the whole Matthew-being-left-money-by-a-dead-guy was really lazy writing and even a bit deus ex machina, the scenes themselves between Dockery and Stevens were well done.

I think the episode was pretty damn good. It was one of the best I’ve seen from them.

The acting was perfect, the comedy was on point and I loved Shirley MacLaine’s introduction and the ridiculous situations over Branson, which of course where perfect for the show, but very bad for these characters. Carson in particular was an ass and I loved every minute of it.

I wish something is resolved soon with Bates because those scenes are starting to become a little tired.

I’m on Matthew’s side but not for the reason’s he cited (it’s not your fault you got the money!), just for the “is this girl serious?” part of the argument. Mary did come off as a brat regardless of the situation being common and understandable of rich people.

    Again, great, great return.

So what did people think? Last week I gave it a B+. Even though it was eons less romantic than last week, I thought this episode was a huge step up, at least in the realm of advanced storytelling. MacLaine was great, and I’ll be sad to see her go. The sub-plots were less shaky (with even the weekly Thomas-being-evil story being fun for the first time since early series 1), and the overarching theme that “maybe all the pomp and circumstance is silly, as we’ll all be gone soon enough” was well put together within multiple storylines and characters. Low points: return of Gwen, continued disagreement between Mary/Matthew/Robert over the will, Daisy is in love with Alfred (although I did like his bit with the American maid. It fit well into the episode), and the performance by the actress who plays Edith. That should be the best character on the show. She’s an underdog and an outsider. I wanted to be ecstatic at the prospect of her marriage. But the actress who plays her simply isn’t compelling, and it isn’t that she’s not attractive. If Elisabeth Moss were a bit younger and less good looking (she looked awesome as a blonde at the Emmys tonight), she would be perfect for this role.

    Overall: A-

Here is my review of last night’s episode, it was a big improvment. MacLaine was the best for me but Smith was up there with her.
