Men’s competition is really weak, Jeremy Davies from last year easily beats them all. On women’s part I’m rooting for Joan Cusack (what a wonderful actress!), Preston (she may join to her husband Michael Emerson who won Emmy for guest role in The Practice) and Martindale (she’s always perfect). Jane Fonda, even if I love her, not deserves win for this pathetic monologue (Waterston was better in that scene).

Joan Cusack, in my opinion, gives the best performance here. She is wonderful on Shameless and has a strong tape. Her character usually is a source of unbridled optimism on the show, but in this particular episode her Sheila knows everything is not right with her daughter. Cusack captures the character’s struggle to let go of Karen, and let her go with Jodie to Arizona—it’s painful to see and very well done. I’d love to see her win as she is a vital character to Shameless, but would voters vote for this show, let alone watch the tape? As I’ve said before, I’m thrilled Diana Rigg and Margo Martindale were nominated. I know it’s difficult to resist the allure of Oscar winner Jane Fonda going to town with big Aaron Sorkin speeches, so she’s the most likely winner.

Hmm. Only one episode through for Guest Actress, but I was actually kind of underwhelmed by Fonda’s submission. Was that her best pick from the season? I was expecting something where she’d be more confrontational with Jeff Daniels.

OMG Some of these Guest Actor tapes were the f*cking pits.

    1. Rupert Friend
    2. Harry Hamlin
    3. Michael J. Fox
    4. Dan Bucatinsky
    5. Nathan Lane
    6. Robert Morse

I think it’s between Friend and Hamlin.  Friend clearly is the best of a weak lot. Hamlin had a nice scene and is a TV vet who  they may reward but he would have to overcome the Mad Men curse.  Fox is a spoiler because he has a lot of screen time and the Parkinson’s must have really been acting up that day because it’s very noticeable on screen which may get votes.

I haven’t seen Dan Bucatinksy’s tape. How is he?

It’s a showy performance where he basically plays the suffering spouse (aka awards-bait).  It’s been pretty divisive around here, but the showiness of it can’t be denied.  The big weakness for me is that in his big confrontation scene he’s completely overshadowed by the actor playing his spouse (Jeff Perry).

Jane Fonda clocked in at about seven minutes and she definitely made the most of it.  I do not think that it is enough to win the Emmy unless the other submissions are horrid.

Did anyone watch these tapes and think Joan Cusack gave the best performance for drama guest actress?? As i said in my first post, this is really a standout performance. Is there such a stigma with Shameless that it’s impossible for her to win? I would love to see an upset here and we do know that these categories are often the hardest to predict…

I think Friend has the best tape, but you defintiely couldn’t discount Fox,Lane or even Hamlin.

I would love to see Carrie Preston win. She should have won last year but didn’t even land the nomination. If she wins, this would keep the “one winning performance a year” streak going for The Good Wife following Archie Panjabi (2010), Julianna Margulies (2011), and Martha Plimpton (2012).

On the Guest side, if the best submission wins, it will go to Rupert Friend. If the most overdue/greatsubmissions wins, it will go to Harry Hamlin.

So yeah, seeing Harry Hamlin and Carrie Preston win would be two of my favorite wins these categories have ever garnered.
