What’s with the over-the-top going-out-of-our-way condemnation or criticism of people smoking in sitcoms? I’ve noticed it in two particular instances: in Friends, all the way through, smoking is this horrific demonic action that is basically an excuse for the writers to go on a campaign signalling how bad smoking is. In real life, friends would not turn a blind eye to another friend smoking. Also, in Veep, when Selina smokes in Helsinki, Gary’s reaction is basically the same. Is there some unwritten rule in comedy TV shows that the writers have to basically create unsubtle strictures regarding smoking? It looks ridiculous.July 7, 2014 at 4:40 pm #321788
Seeing film and television characters smoke makes me cringe.July 7, 2014 at 5:48 pm #321789

Sarah Jessica Parker smoked like a chimney on sex and the city. I hope to god that they were fake cigerettes because if they were real her lungs must be FUCKED UP!July 7, 2014 at 6:53 pm #321791
Being someone who’s been deviled by cigarettes my whole life, I don’t think they can be condemned enuf.

and Jessica Lange keep on chain-smoking on every season of American Horror Story.July 7, 2014 at 8:27 pm #321793
Part of its the LA culture I think. So many shows are made by people who are surrounded by strident anti smoking and they think its funny to make fun of anti smoking or be sincere in opposing smoking. But also it was common that “villains” smoke like cigarette smoking man on The X Files and just man other shows and movies. I think audiences prefer non smoking characters.July 7, 2014 at 9:50 pm #321794
While I am against smoking in general and think it is a disgusting habit, I am not really bothered when I see characters smoking in film or television for some odd reason. I have even written some characters smoking in my writing subjects.July 8, 2014 at 5:45 am #321795
I’m not a smoker, never have been and have no desire to be, but I just feel they sometimes go overboard with the negativity in these TV shows… I’ve never seen that kind of reaction to close friends in real life. But hey, what’s realistic about Friends at the end of the day anyway?
