Thanks to the hard work of Gold Derby’s savvy forum posters (all of YOU), we just had a major effect on the Emmys. Unfortunately it came at MacNicol’s expense, but still, keep up the great work, you super sleuths!

Wasn’t it thedemonhog, rather than “the hard work of Gold Derby’s savvy forum posters (all of YOU)”?

I hate this new rule the most. Screentime is not what qualifies someone as a guest star it how their character fits in to the story. His character didn’t have that much screentime in the episodes he was in and didn’t interact with every main character. This is shameful.

Who do we think will replace him?

I am thinking it may be Fred Armisen for SNL

My guess for his replacement: Steve Buscemi for “Portlandia.”

This new rule is amazing and if you don’t like it you can take several sits.

Bill Murray for Angie Tribeca or Louis C.K. for Portlandia my predictions right now.

Wait what happens if the 8th nominee is in the %2 distance? Is it possible to have more than 1 nominee?

Yikes, this is a mess. I think it should be screen time, rather than number of episodes. I’m glad that they addressed the guest/supporting issue, though, because I just started watching Shameless and Joan Cusack is supporting for sure! The fact that she was nominated in guest for so many years is so unfair to the actual guest actresses. I don’t think his nomination should’ve been revoked, though. Really shitty thing to do after the fact. I understand why they did it, but how unfortunate to think that you were nominated for an Emmy and then less than a week later…wait just kidding!

Nuts. Can anyone seriously make the argument, Emmy rules aside, that MacNicol was on the level of a Supporting Actor this season?

Meanwhile, leads Keegan-Michael Key, Allison Janney and Tituss Burgess are still in Supporting categories.

Well I know back in the day sometimes undeniable guest stars would get noms/wins in Lead cuz guest categories didn’t exist…

I’m very disappointed for MacNicol and I think the Academy made the wrong choice in rescinding the nomination. Instead, the Academy should have a) acknowledged the oversight and the overlapping timing of the ballots being released prior to the completion of filming / editing of Veep, and b) precluded him from being voted on as the winner, while allowing him to retain the honor of being a nominee, which was bestowed almost a week ago.

That happened just one year though, when the Emmys inexplicably added one slot to each category, reserved for a guest performer.

    G’Day,
There have always been problems with the guest categories and who’s eligible. There is probably not a perfect solution. I think a % is probably the best way to do it and would just suggest they change it to 50% rather than <50% (currently I think it's harder for even numbered episode shows).

I'm pretty upset cause I think that PM deserved to win, but the academy had to do what they did. Other actors didn't submit themselves because they were in 5 of 10 episodes. You can't have him nominated and not Dianna Rigg.

I also think they should’ve let him keep the nomination as it was still “legal” when it happened and he’s very clearly NOT a supporting actor anyway. Some sort of statement could’ve been made and leave it at that. Internally or even publicly, make him inelegible for the win, but let him keep his nomination as this is not the Academy or McNicol’s fault, but somebody with the Veep camp who included him in an episode after the submissions. Specially since this came a week after the nominations instead of a Jason Sudeikis situation.

But I guess this is just an “awww poor McNicol” or “I love Veep” sentiment, because in the end, those are the rules and it is “fair” and “the right thing to do”.
