What episode of a show would you have preferred to see as the series finale than the one actually written as the conclusion to the show?

    Here are two examples:

Weeds: “God Willing and the Creek Don’t Rise” as an alternate finale to the the official finale “It’s Time”.  While I didn’t mind the real finale as much as many did, I thought the episode prior, in which Nancy and the family return to Agrestic (now Regrestic) was the perfect way to bring the story full circle and could have served as a great last episode, even with and perhaps because of the heartbreaking final minutes.

The Golden Girls: “That’s For Me To Know” as an better finale to the official finale “One Flew Out of the Cuckoo’s Nest”.  I actively dislike the series finale because of its really sad ending.  It was nice to see Dorothy get married, and yes it set up The Golden Palace spin-off, but it was a poor decision to end the series with one of the core four leaving and the other three in tears.  I think “That’s For Me To Know” is a much better story to conclude the series: Blanche is in state violation for renting to three tenants, and it looks like someone will have to move out.  Instead, Dorothy proposes that Blanche sell each of them a portion of the house, and although Blanche is remiss to sell her home to anyone due to her memories of her husband, she ultimately does and they are allowed to stay together.  It’s a nice storyline that emphasizes the tight knit relationship between the women and would have ended the show on a very happy note.

Does anyone else have any examples?  I think about this topic a lot, and thought it would be a fun to share on Gold Derby and see what people come up with!

Off the top of my head I can’t think of any that I would have necessarily preferred, but there are some that might have been interesting.

I’ve always thought that if Lost had ended on “The Incident” people would have obviously been quite pissed but it would have actually made for an interesting (if extremely ambiguous) ending.

Breaking Bad’s “Face Off” feels sort of like a finale, and wouldn’t have been a bad one either, but the show is obviously better for the fact that it wasn’t the end.

Mad Men’s “The Phantom” could have been a pretty bad ass finale. Rewatch that final montage. Great stuff. And the last shot would make for a cool “did he or didn’t he” Sopranos-type moment, with the question being whether Don has actually changed with Meagan or is right back to where he began.

Parks and Rec’s “Moving Up” is basically the finale, from a certain point of view. Season 7 is great, but it feels very different and is almost like an extended epilogue. “Moving Up” is a fantastic finale to the main show.

    Glee – “Goodbye”

An almost perfect series finale (that would have avoided ashamed itself to unbearable lows; at that point the series were still relevant and well-liked). This episode it is a really good closure. New Directions winning the Nationals and now respected back at McKinley, Mr. Schue named teacher of the year, the students graduating, and then the little bittersweet twist: Rachel sent away to chase her dreams in New York leaving behind everyone else.

    The end.

Dexter season 8 and finale were soooooo bad that i have repress those episodes from my memory. Instead in my mind Dexter ended on season 7 finale “Surprise mother…” but instead of deb shooting laguerta, she shoots dexter and the end, no need for that horrible final season and series finale. Although, i still cant believe that dexter didnt end with Dexter sitting on old sparky, as i always imagine, too bad.

All in the Family – “The Stivics Go West”, so that it could have ended when Norman Lear departed from the show, avoiding the eventual divorce between Mike and Gloria.

ER – I’ve always had a soft spot for ER, weaker seasons included, and I actually think its actual series finale was pretty wonderfully done. That said, I think it could have retained a more proper TV legacy (quality-wise) if they had just let things go after Anthony Edwards departed in “On the Beach”.

The Office – “Goodbye, Michael” could’ve worked as a sufficient finale. As it stands, I pretty much just jump from that episode to the last 2 episodes of the show on rewatch, anyways.

Torchwood – The way things currently stand, “Children of the Earth” seems like it would have made for a powerful ending to the series. It has more finality to it than “Miracle Day”, at least.

The alternative ending to How I Met Your Mother is really interesting. I liked the one they actually aired, but the alternative one they included in the bonus features is just perfect. It’s on YouTube, for anyone who hasn’t seen it. It erases a small part of the finale, making it a far more optimistic one admittedly, and sums up the series in a far more touching way.

Everybody Loves Raymond: The Home/Not So Fast would have made a great series finale:

24: Season 4 finale would have been a fantastic way to end the series, although it was far too early to end the series.

Chuck: Just about every midseason and season finale, and Chuck vs the Baby would have been better finales than the final arc they did.

I agree, that pairing of episodes would have made for a great series finale!  I actually happen to love the real Everybody Loves Raymond finale, though, but it really feels like they wrote “The Home” and “Not So Fast” as a pseudo-finale to start the final season.

From the title, I thought that this thread would compare original finales with their (sometimes only temporary) replacements:

    • Arrested Development: “Development Arrested” versus “Blockheads”
    • The Comeback: “Valerie Does Another Classic Leno” versus “Valerie Gets What She Really Wants”
    • Community: “Basic Sandwich” versus “Emotional Consequences of Broadcast Television”
    • Cougar Town: “Your World” versus “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”
    • Damages: “The Next One’s Gonna Go in Your Throat” versus “But You Don’t Do That Anymore”
    • Friday Night Lights: “May the Best Man Win” versus “Always”
    • Jericho: “Why We Fight” versus “Patriots and Tyrants”
    • The Killing: “The Road to Hamelin” versus “Eden”
    • Medium: “Bring Me the Head of Oswaldo Castillo” versus “Me without You”
    • Scrubs: “My Finale” versus “Our Thanks”
    • Southland: “Maximum Deployment” versus “Reckoning”
    • 24: “Day 8: 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.” versus “Day 9: 10:00 p.m. – 11:00 a.m.”

Before the very last ep of season 6 community, I felt that they could have used the season 3 final 3 eps as the finale. But I loved especially the first half of season 5, so maybe if they had finished with GI Jeoff which is actually a pretty touching and fitting tribute to the show.
But… I absolutely adored the final three eps of season 6, especially the very finale. Easily one of my fave episodes of tv the whole season.
