This was inspired by the thread about comedic moments that happened in the best drama shows.

I want to know everyone’s favorite serious/emotional scenes that took place in a comedy series. I’ll start with something recent:

    “Goodbye, Michael”.

-From Parks & Rec’s “Halloween Surprise,” Ben proposes to Leslie
-From Louie’s “Daddy’s Girlfriend Part 2,” Parker Posey’s monologue on the rooftop
-From Roseanne’s “Crime and Punishment,” it is revealed that Jackie’s boyfriend has been abusive, prompting Dan to go beat the hell out of the guy.

Debra Messing’s Emmy-winning performance at the end of “The Kid Stays Out of the Picture”.

“Edith’s 50th Birthday” from All in the Family where a man attempts to rape Edith.

Some of these just weren’t funny or were never intended to be, but would hardly qualify as “dramatic” or “serious”. Like Goodbye Michael or Ben proposing to Leslie on Parks and Rec.

A true example is The Kid Stays Out of the Picture from Will & Grace.

Another easy one would be Scrubs with My Screwup. Also My Nickname, not sure if that’s the name, but I’m talking about the one where Carla and JD fight over JD (rightfully) screaming at her.

My Motherboard, Myself from Sex and the City which is always a popular choice for these threads.

Scrubs – My Lunch, My Screw Up, My Nickname, My Bed, Banter, and Beyond… there are too many Scrubs episodes.  Scrubs did drama better than some actual dramas do.

I’d also say that one could pick any episode of The Wonder Years for an example.

Glee “Props” = Where Coach Beastie confronts her husband about the abuse
Will & Grace “23” = Karen reacting to the death of Stan

I loved the scene in the Parks and Rec season 4 finale where Leslie Knope votes for herself.

The scene from “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” where Will’s father has yet again disappointed and abandoned him and he hugs Uncle Phil.  Gets me everytime I see it.

From ‘Louie’, I’d say “Bully” had some wonderfully done moments of subtle drama. The punk confronting Louie and forcing him to beg him not to beat him up, then Louie following him home and confronting him and his parents, especially when he confronts the kid’s dad. Very well done.

THIS!!!! A million times this. I don’t just cry, I basically BAWL every time I see this episode. And I’ve seen it MANY times. My brothers do as well, and they both are not the type to get emotional watching films or television. It’s just so well done, and the build up to that moment… It’s very powerful, especially the way that Smith goes from explosive anger to quiet sadness, when he says (I’m paraphrasing), “I’LL BE A BETTER FATHER THAN EVER WAS!! TO HELL WITH HIM!!!…… Why doesn’t he want me?”.. I’m getting choked up just typing it out.
