“Long Term Parking” – The Sopranos, which I consider to be the most intense and heartbreaking episode the show ever had, and the conclusion to the arc that left the biggest impact on me.

“God” –  Louie, not the funniest episode of the show (alhtough it does have that great “God’s a shitty girlfriend” stand up bit), but the one I most indentified with, and one that’s intelligent, inventive and emotional.

Six Feet Under – “Everyone’s Waiting”

Hands down. No other episode of television has ever affected me as much as this.  I was a total mess.

Louie – While I’m not through the second season yet, I would cite two episodes that equally impressed me, moved me, and unnerved me. They also worked to remind me that the Emmy categories of Drama and Comedy can be broad and subjective sometimes, and that a series like this one can happily live in that wonderfully intriguing grey area between the two. “God” was an episode that was 95% flashback, abandoned all previously-set ground rules, and still managed to hold my attention. It had so much to say about religion, fear, love, and guilt, without ever having to say much at all. But even as I write this, I doubt I’ve seen as brutally-realistic an episode as “Bully” in a long time. The scene in the donut shop was so real that I felt uncomfortable; at one point, when I had to pause the episode to do something, I was honestly concerned about returning to it. But when Louie follows the kid home… dad gum it, this show is good.

Lost – “The Shape of Things to Come” – Coming off of an uncomfortable and unpredictable writer’s strike, I feel as though the series returned on the highest note possible. Not only was Michael Emerson given the best material he ever had to work with on the show, but this hour was packed with absolutely everything I loved about the series: the sci-fi elements of the Smoke Monster, the mystery of the Ben and Widmore conversation, the thematic connection between Penny and Alex, and that brave, unexpected character death. I had been having my doubts about the series at that point, and this episode reassured me in a single sitting.

Breaking Bad – “Full Measure” – In 44 minutes, Vince Gilligan is able to introduce, complicate, and execute Walt and Jesse’s plan of “him or us,” and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. The entire installment, we are convinced that Walt is unaware of Gus’s wheeling and dealing behind his back; we should have known better, as the scientific aspect of Walt’s personality forced him to think through every possible outcome. It is that methodical planning that ultimately saves Walt’s life, further blurring the morality of our anti-hero.

Rubicon – “Wayward Sons” – Everything the team had worked for came to a head in this episode, in which the time table has sudden shrank, and the investigators are left to figure out the how, the who, and the where-in-the-hell. When the attack happens, the implications of it, mixed with the sense of failure that Will and his crew have, left us wondering where the story would go next. I would have loved to see the repercussions of the attack play out in Season 2 … had there been a Season 2.

I have a funny, a bit weird thing with “Breaking Bad”: I always like the first “part” better in these sorta episode pairs they have, even though the second part normally has the bigger moments. I actually liked “Sunset” better than “One Minute” for example (in fact, it’s a contender for my all-time favorite episode). And even though I do love “Full Measures”, I just like “Half Measures” more (also a candidate for that title).
In fact, when I first watched season four, I prefered “Face Off” to “End Times”. But guess what? I rewatched the season in July, and I was suprised by how much more I liked “End Times” than I had when it first aired, and that one is now also one of my favorite episodes ever, and even though i still love “Face Off” it isn’t as rewatchable as I thought it would be, at least not as much when in comparison to the three previous episodes.

However, this isn’t just aleatory: I like “Sunset” by how unexpected it felt to have Hank corner Walt and Jesse when it still had pratically half an episode left, plus the hospital scene, the last RV scene, that damn cliffhanger… I like “Half Measures” because – sorta paraphrasing Trent Reznor here – it’s a downward spiral of character development that leads to the biggest holy shit ending the show had up to that point, and explored some different dynamics between the characters, setting up not only the finale, but a lot of what would become the focus of season four. And I like “End Times” because it’s just so incredibly tense and heartbreaking and full of uncertainty. Anyway, I’m babbling and it’s late and I have to wake up early, so I’ll stop, since “Breaking Bad” fans have hijacked a lot of threads recently.
