What is your favorite single-episode drama performance? My personal favorite single-episode drama performance is Edie Falco in “Whitecaps”.

I thought Six Feet Under’s Lauren Ambrose in the penultimate series episode Static was awesome.

I’ll throw out Treme’s Khandi Alexander in Smoke My Peace Pipe and Melissa Leo in I’ll Fly Away for good measure. Both excellent and heartwrenching stuff that could’ve resulted in a win back in 2010 had the Emmys been more friendly with the show.

I’ve been watching The Sopranos again, I wasn’t that much of a regular watcher back then. This is not necessarily my favorite performance or whatever but I’m right on that episode now. You can’t tell me anybody else in the world deserved those Emmys more than Michael Imperioli and Drea DeMatteo for Irregular Around the Margins and Long Term Parking. One of the most perfect submissions ever. If I have to pick one or the other for this thread, I would go with Irregular Around the Margins for both of them.

No need to mention Edie Falco in Whitecaps. People win Oscars for MUCH less.

    In order:
1st: Julianna Margulies – The Good Wife – In Sickness
    2nd (a real close 1st): Claire Danes – Homeland – The Vest
3rd: Bryan Cranston – Breaking Bad – Phoenix
    4th: Damien Lewis – Homeland – Q&A
5th: Aaron Paul – Breaking Bad – End Times
6th: Archie Panjabi – The Good Wife – Getting Off
7th: Giancarlo Esposito – Breaking Bad – Box Cutter

There are many other performances I love, like that of Christine Baranski, Anna Gunn, Maura Tierney (ER days), Jeff Daniels, Jon Hamm, Vera Farmiga and Mandy Patinkin, but they don’t shine in just one single episode, i.e. leave a lasting memory, the ways these guys do (bare in mind I haven’t yet watch beyond S3 of Mad Men, or S4 of Breaking Bad – so this could all change). I don’t think I can forget Alicia telling Peter it’s a no, Carrie breaking down, Walt breaking down, Brody breaking down, Jesse breaking down, Kalinda breaking down and Gus showing Victor whose boss. I guess I like seeing characters in my favourite shows break down.
