Who gave your favorite TV breakthrough performances of 2016 and why?

Connor Jessup was one of my MVPs of 2016 for “American Crime.” Should have been nominated — heck he should have won. No offense to Sterling K. Brown (“The People v. OJ Simpson”), who deserved it too and I’d count here twice for that performance as well as “This is Us.” And of course Jessup’s co-star Joey Pollari was stellar as well.

“Mr. Robot” was in its second season this year, but I thought it was a real breakthrough year for Carly Chaikin as Darlene.

And how could I forget Samantha Bee, who I think became TV’s leading voice of political outrage this year on “Full Frontal.”

Who else had great breakthroughs this year?

For me it was oubviously Carly Chaikin with Millie Bobby Brown in second. I hope they can both get an Emmy nom. I would say Simone Missick in third. She was so great on Luke Cage and it is a shame she will probobly get no awards recognition. I also can’t forget about Issa Rae, she was great. Samira Wiley and Sterling K Brown were also breakthrough performances. Adina Porter was also a huge standout for me this year.

    Honorable mentions:

Chrissy Metz, Ruth negga, Jimmie Simpson, Gaten Mazzerato, Kylie Bunburry, Deborah Ayorinde, Donald Glover,  Ris Ahmed. Mikey Madison, Alia Shawkat, Caitlin Fitzgerald, and Tracee Lysette. I also want to include Allison Williams because she had a breakthrough seaso. For her character.

    Donald Glover.

He looked like an 80s’ pornstar at Critics Choice.

    So true! Hahahaha

As for the question: Connor Jessup, Joey Pollari, Sterling K. Brown, Adina Porter (she’s always great addition but she showed on AHS what she’s truly capable of), Carly Chaikin, Millie Bobby Brown, Chrissy Metz, Issa Rae, Riz Ahmed and Alison Wright.

Sterling K. Brown for sure. I have fallen in love with him as an actor. Not only was he the heart of OJ (along with Sarah Paulson), but he is so, so good in This Is Us. He’s my favorite actor of the year.

While I think her show’s overrated, Alison Wright had a truly stunning breakout turn in The Americans this year.

Sterling K. Brown in The People V. O.J. Simpson. He showed just how much of a role Christopher Darden played in the O.J. Simpson trial, and that it wasn’t just Marcia Clark doing all the work.

    You mean “breakout”?

Sterling K. Brown’s duet of roles, Bryan Tyree Henry on Atlanta, Caitlin FitzGerald on Rectify, William Jackson Harper on The Good Place, Claire Foy on The Crown, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal on Westworld, the main cast of Insecure.

I have been catching up on the Crown and I must include Kate Phillips, who has a small and tragic role as Churchills secretary.
