#1 is the best submission. To be in the top five, they must have submitted their best tape of the year:

    10. Lizzy Caplan
    9. Tony Hale
    8. Kate Mulgrew
    7. (TIE) Peter Dinklage & Aaron Paul
    6. Melissa McCarthy
    5. Claire Danes
    4. Ricky Gervais
    3. Anna Gunn
    2. Julia Louis-Dreyfus
    1. Bryan Cranston

good choices so far. I was surprised at how good Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ episode was considering the bitching about it that I had heard from some of our Editors (you know who you are!). She’ll be hard to beat. But I was totally and thoroughly KNOCKED OUT by Ricky Gervais’ submission. WOW. I don’t see how that guy can possibly lose.

Ralph is 100% wrong on JLD — no other way to say it.

Gervais is so stellar in Derek. The ending monologue about his dad had me in tears at the end! I guess my big difference compared to others is that I don’t think Allison Janney is a lock for either category she is up for.

It’s interesting that Melissa McCarthy has an episode submission just like Ricky’s — they both deal with their dad’s deaths. In Ricky’s case, it’s immediate, of course, and the story and dialog are so poignant that they, yeah, leave all of us with soggy eyes. McCarthy revisits her dad’s death from years ago and it has its touching moments, too, but I don’t think it’s the same kind of actors’ showcase as Julia’s. But then, let’s recall that voters often respond emotionally …

Agreed, I think it’s her best submission to date!

I think both Claire Danes and JLD submit their best episodes from their seasons, which are also their best tapes to date. They had a couple of tapes that were arguably better than the ones they submitted and won for in the last two years, but they had quite many to choose from and their second/third bests were still very strong.

Claire Danes could suffer from Homeland backlash, but now that her main competition screws up her submission, she could easily win again. If it’s not her, then Kerry Washington could Jeff Daniels her way to a victory based on her submission full of speeches.

JLD seems like a lock and Veep is on the rise, but an actress from a new, buzzed-about show usually prevails in this category. So watch out for Taylor Schilling.

I’ve seen every single one of the Drama contenders and I can say that Cranston, Danes, Gunn, Dinklage, Morton and Janney all submitted the best episodes. I have them all in my #1 positions except for Cranston. I think voters will give the Emmy to movie star McConaughey and ignore the episode submission there.

For what I’ve watched so far:

    1. Peter Dinklage
    2. Robert Morse (can’t believe no one had mentioned)
    3. Brian Cranston
    4. Anna Gunn
    5. Jon Hamm
    6. Lizzy Caplan
    7. Aaron Paul
    8. Lena Headey

Peter Dinklage is easily my number 1 because I can’t remember any other episode this season that hyped people that much about an actor that SHOULD win an Emmy again.

Many people said that Hamm should go with Waterloo or Monolith, but The Strategy is very much like The Suitcase from season 4 that I can’t help but feel that is really the right choice for him.

I feel also that Headey (or HBO, whoever made the choice) submitted her best episode. I know she has more screentime and a little nice speech en “First Of His Name”. But “The Lion And The Rose” has Cersei at her finest (so bitchy), and the final scene when she goes completely nuts is, IMO, very baity. I doubt she wins, but I think it was her best submission.

Of the episode submissions I have watched so far the ones that were surprisingly great are the entire cast of Scandal (very surprised by Washington’s tape), Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Melissa McCarthy (lead actress), as well as Anna Gunn and Bryan Cranston.
