We asked the folks here at Gold Derby to submit their 10 Best Programs of the TV Season combing all genres (Drama/Comedy/Variety/Reality/etc.). This was done over the course of three weeks with several folks binging on shows they had not seen that were being heavily touted/recommended by you all in the forums, and each other. After much time and consideration, here is how the voting went down –

Gold Derby Editors’ Picks: Seasons 10 Best TV Programs:

    1) Breaking Bad, AMC (BY.A.LAND.SLIDE)

    2) Fargo, FX
    3) Hannibal, NBC
    4) The Good Wife, CBS
    5) House of Cards, Netflix

    6) Game of Thrones, HBO
    7) Orange is the New Black, Netflix
    8) Shameless, Showtime
    9) Modern Family, ABC
    10) The Killing, AMC

Honorable Mentions (in no particular order): Broadchurch, Silicon Valley, Review, Treme, Rick & Morty, The Normal Heart, Survivor, Masters of Sex, Looking, True Detective, Veep, The Late Show with Craig Ferguson

If you think we’re just flat-out wrong, let us know! And then please add your Top 10 of the Season (all genres) in this thread.

We also did a Top 20 performances (which was even more difficult) that will be released tomorrow.

I’m in agreement with every one of those except for two: Shameless and The Killing. I would have replaced them with Veep and Survivor but overall a good list

Great list! The only thing I would change is Modern Family with Veep.

House of Cards in your top five equates to no respect from me. And why has this become such a list obsessed forum?

    1. Breaking Bad
    2. True Detective
    3. The Americans
    4. Game of Thrones
    5. Silicon Valley
    6. Boardwalk Empire
    7. Broad City
    8. Orange is the New Black
    9. Mad Men
    10. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Really not getting the House of Cards S2 love. The writing is so horrible. Total emperor with no clothes that thinks it’s a revolutionary show. I can guarantee if you replace Spacey with a moderately talented unknown, far fewer people would like this show (not nobody, relax). Surprised to see True Detective out of the top 10 and Americans not even getting a mention among the top 22.

    Thought you liked lists?

Shameless, The Killing, and House of Cards belong nowhere near the top 10.  No True Detective is suspect.  I imagine most aren’t watching Review or The Americans.  Fargo is going to become a show that loved and end up hating because of the fans overrating it.

Ha to the True Dectective shade. The groupthink backlash is real.

I like lists, but damn. We get a new list thread everyday. “Top Ten Breaking Bad Scenes Where Jesse said ‘Bitch”.

My only (and big) complain is Masters of Sex not being there (top 5 in my list), and in lesser way, Veep.  I would also add The Walking Dead, but I don´t think it would have a chance in hell to get in there.

I have to watch Fargo asap!

Ooh I just missed a slight mistake. Modern Family is from ABC.

    Thanks for the catch, Webly.

Everyone confused by the House of Cards love, I was as well. I didn’t expect so many of the lists to have it ranked, and then so highly, but I was wrong. Veep, Masters, and True Detective all had support, but never in the top spots (or near) in anyones list. Don’t think there’s really a backlash with True Detective, just everyone has been able to sit on it for a bit and realize there were far better shows out there with non-shitty endings. It’s right where it should be. Top 20, just not top 10.

Also, kinda foolish to state “this/that show belong nowhere near the top 10” if you’ve admitted to not having watched the season of that particular show.

Ick – I like your list idea. We’ll do that one after we post the performances list tomorrow. Keep those lists/polls ideas comin’. You’re a genius with these!

I find the Modern Family inclusion pretty surprising, even taking its recent uptick in quality into account. Maybe I just figured the fatigue had gotten to the Editors, but I also recall none of them having it in their Top 10 lists for 2013, so either the 2nd half of the season must have really impressed them, or some of the editors who didn’t participate in the webchat had it high up on their lists. At the very least, I’d figure Veep would come out ahead of it. That seems to have been near-universally praised by the editors.

House of Cards in your top five equates to no respect from me.

Only three of the six of us had it in and I had it highest, so my bad.

I’m in agreement with every one of those except for
two: Shameless and The Killing. I would have replaced them with Veep and
Survivor but overall a good list

Marcus was the only one with Veep or Survivor.

Ha to the True Dectective shade. The groupthink backlash is real.

I was the only one to list True Detective.

I imagine most aren’t watching Review or The Americans.

I think that three of the six of us watched Review, but only I had it in my top ten.  I was also the only one with The Americans in my top ten.

My only (and big) complain is Masters of Sex not
being there (top 5 in my list), and in lesser way, Veep.

    Only
    Daniel listed Masters of Sex.

I find the Modern Family inclusion pretty
surprising, even taking its recent uptick in quality into account. Maybe
I just figured the fatigue had gotten to the Editors, but I also recall
none of them having it in their Top 10 lists for 2013, so either the
2nd half of the season must have really impressed them, or some of the
editors who didn’t participate in the webchat had it high up on their
    lists.

Only two of the six of us listed Modern Family and one was not in the year-end chat.

And why has this become such a list obsessed
    forum?

I am of the opinion that the end of the calendar year is the
time for top tens and the middle is for fantasy nominations.
