Greta Gerwig has officially been cast as the lead in the ‘How I Met Your Mother’ spin-off. She will also produce and help write for the series. Here’s the story from The Hollywood Reporter: LINK.
Gerwig was recently nominated for Best Actress at the Independent Spirit Awards and the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for the film ‘Frances Ha’.
What are your guys’ thoughts on this?February 11, 2014 at 8:14 pm #310712
This may be only with people like us on the internet, but I feel like Gerwig might be a little too famous. Honestly no one was really that famous in the original, with Neil patrick Harris as a child star making a comeback the closest thing, and Radnor if anything was proabbly the least recognizable out of the bunch. Gerwig was like on her way to becoming a movie star, so I’m worried that this might just become “The Greta Gerwig Show” where she interacts with other famous guest stars. And this show already has a built in buzz and noteworthiness so they didn’t even need anyone famous
Plus from what i know about her mumblecore-esque style (which admittedly is not much) I don’t know if it’s really going to gel with the HIMYM style of humor. Of course I’ll watch it but this makes me a little nervous, though it’s not necessarily any fault of Gerwig’sFebruary 11, 2014 at 8:16 pm #310713
Her previous films are more akin to ‘Girls’, imho (especially ‘Frances Ha’, which she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach), but maybe this will speak to the new style that they are going for (more hipster-esque, quirky, rather than broader humor)?February 11, 2014 at 8:35 pm #310714
Really? Greta Gerwig is more famous now than Alyson Hannigan from Buffy and American Pie was when Mother started? Even a Doogie Howser comeback is more famous of a line than “Greta Gerwig has been cast”….”WHO?” is the question that follows that. They did not get somebody “famous”.
Mother gets what? 9 million viewers a week? I can’t even imagine the extremely low number of those viewers who watched Frances Ha, Greenberg, Damsels in Distress or even remember they once saw that forgettable Portman/Kutcher movie she was in.
Anyway, this looks like the weirdest choice in the world both for the show and Gerwig herself. But maybe they wanted somebody that looks and acts as uncomfortable as half the cast on Mother does. I 100% hate this stupid overrated show, and I’m not too much into Gerwig either, but the tone of both the show and her acting actually seem like a good fit.
On the logical side, and a serious note, this girl looks like she wants to keep writing films and possibly even direct them in the future, and none of the things she’s done could have left her with that much money, so a steady paycheck like this will do the trick for somebody like her.February 11, 2014 at 8:39 pm #310715
Also, Frances Ha was awful.
When are they going to fix the title?February 11, 2014 at 8:50 pm #310716
Also, Frances Ha was awful.
I see nothing here but lies.
Have no interest in this spinoff. HIMYM at its best didn’t do much for me.February 11, 2014 at 8:52 pm #310717
At least I actually finished Frances Ha, unlike Damsels in Distress.February 11, 2014 at 8:55 pm #310718
Don’t see what that borderline crap has to do with Frances Ha, which was one of last year’s best efforts.February 11, 2014 at 9:01 pm #310719
Gerwig was the lead in both well-reviewed movies.February 11, 2014 at 9:04 pm #310720
DiD got decidely mixed reviews, and I don’t stan for Gerwig btw. I can only stan for one actress at at time, and I’m still stuck on Maslany until OB’s disappointing second season.February 11, 2014 at 9:12 pm #310721
At least I actually finished Frances Ha...
You’re a better man than I, then.February 11, 2014 at 9:32 pm #310722
I didn’t finish Frances Ha either, and mostly because Gerwig annoyed me too much. Thinking about it, the movie on its entirety annoyed me too much.
I hate the fact that this spin off exists, and the casting just makes it worse for me.February 11, 2014 at 10:28 pm #310723
Damn. I’ve found a corner of the Internet that wants to slam Frances Ha? Blasphemy! Of all the places…
My first thought upon hearing this was that Gerwig was far too good for it, but hearing that she will help write it instills some unexpected pleasure in me. Still has a terrible title, but I might be willing to tune in if buzz is good.February 11, 2014 at 10:41 pm #310724
No need to re-iterate how I feel about Brazilians and Canadians.
