Great premiere episode, especially for a show in its 8th season. The strongest element of this show still remains Meredith and Cristina. I love the dynamic between them, and Pompeo and Oh are outstanding. Interesting to see what happens with the Chief now.

I’m very pleased that the writers had Cristina have the abortion. It would have been against everything Cristina has been for her to suddenly have a baby.

I thought episode 3 (“Take The Lead”) was a solid ‘Grey’s’ episode. The final scene between Meredith & Derek was spectacular from both actors. I know this has all but completely fallen off Emmy radar but the performers are still very strong and it’s a shame none of the regular actors (the ones that are still around, that is) have an Emmy, and more didn’t get nominated when the show was in it’s prime. Also a shoutout to Chandra Wilson who has proven herself as a director for the series.

You were right about that scene between Meredith and Derek. Great stuff. Only thing I didn’t like about it is how they brought music in halfway through the scene. The scene was so freakin good and I was so captivated by it, that the music felt false to me. They should have just kept it silent on the soundtrack.

Yeah, it’s a shame Ellen Pompeo will never be nominated for her work on “Grey’s”. (“Do you have kids?” “I….let’s get back to your surgery”)

And Sandra Oh still kills it every week. “Call the morgue. The patient is dead”

I was wondering whe this thread would show up.

The premiere was just too much and got me thinking why this show isn’t over yet. This really should be their final season, they clearly have nothing new to offer. I know ABC might not want to see Greys and Housewives go out at the same time leaving them with nothing else from their golden year of 2004-2005, but it’s time for both shows. Maybe they’ll want to wait and see if anything else sticks, because they only have Modern Family and Dancing With the Stars to show off with, but this show is done.

The second episode was a little bit better. And I agree that on both episodes Sandra Oh shows that she’ll rise above anything the writers throw on this tired show.

The background music on this show has been bugging me for a few years now. It’s mixed way too loud, to the point of distraction. I loathe it.  Music can be used to great effect, as we all know, but when it competes with dialog, and draws that much attention to itself, it’s not a good thing. At all. Clearly, they’re trying to sell downloads, or whatever, instead of using music as it should be used.

Even though the episodes are hit and miss,  Pompeo and Oh have been KILLING IT(Dempsey has also been good) so far this season!   I really hope that both actresses move on to something better…I’d love to see both have an Emmy but they aren’t going to do it for this show.

Thought I’d resurrect this thread to post about last night’s episode.

Wow. One of the best episodes this show has ever created. Ellen Pompeo just lives and breathes Meredith and she gutted me in this episode.  Patrick Dempsey was at this best as well. Loved the scene with him and Kelly McCreary when he finds out she’s Meredith’s sister. Great moment.
Nicole Rubio did a beautiful job at directing this. I love some of the angles in flashback scenes, and it was great having Kate Burton back.

This show can still bring it. I’ve noticed how much attention this episode got on various entertainment websites, and it deserved it.  A superb hour of television.

the guy who plays the young Richard is the same, but they probably couldn’t afford Sarah Paulson, right?

I read about this a couple weeks ago. Sarah Paulson wasn’t able to come back because of her filming schedule with American Horror Story.

It was one of my favorite episodes ever though I disagree on you about Derek. Anyway, loved all the flashbacks and how this made us understand more about Ellis Grey and Meredith, adding to the storyline in season 4 I think where the therapist makes Mer realize that her mom was a surgeon so I she wanted to kill herself, she would have know how to. Ellis and Mer are fighters.

Yeah, wasn’t an issue of money. Sarah is busy shooting AHS across the country in New Orleans.

I also thought this episode was phenomenal. One of the best Grey’s episodes in years.

something feels “off” for me this season. Like nothing is having the impact its supposed have.   I also don’t understand the strange introduction for Geena Davis’s character.  She has had very little to do so far and I’m not sure why they bothered casting her at all, this role could have been played by anybody at this point.

Maggie just isn’t working for me. This would have had more impact earlier in the shows run and feels lackluster now.   I feel like if Adele was alive this would have been a fantastic time for Loretta Divine to reappear and scream at Richard for cheating on her and so on.     Nothing seems to have the stakes it should.

I kind of like Maggie.  And I understand the timing of the arrival of her character, with Cristina gone.  I loved the Ellis Grey video, especially at the end. Good to see Kate Burton again.

Agree about Geena Davis’s character. Thought she was just a guest actress for an episode or two, but she’s a regular cast member this season?  Her addition has had almost zero impact, so far.

Ellen Pompeo was great in this episode.  I do miss Sandra Oh, and the occasional appearances of Loretta Divine.

IDK about Geena Davis.  I thought I had read she was a series regular.  But even if she is just a guest star I feel like they didn’t do much to use her and it seems like a wasted oppurtunity to use an actress of her calibre in what amounts to about 2 scenes in total.
