Halle Berry To Topline CBS Series ‘Extant’

The fairytale ride of sci-fi spec Extant continues. After snagging one of the biggest commitments this season, a 13-episode straight to series order from CBS for next summer, the project has landed Oscar winner Halle Berry as the lead in her first series regular role. Additionally, Berry and her producing partner, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, have entered into a two-year, first-look production deal with CBS TV Studios.

Extant, from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV and CBS Studios, centers on an astronaut (Berry) who returns home from a year-long solo mission in space and tries to reconnect with her husband and son in their everyday life. Her experiences in space and home lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history. “There’s only one Halle Berry and we are incredibly honored that she has chosen Extant to expand her illustrious career,” Spielberg said. “As she does with everything she touches, she will bring a deep authenticity to her role and I very much look forward to working with her.” Added CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler, “Halle is the type of award-winning actress you dream of collaborating with for an event project such as Extant.

Landing Berry represents a major coup for CBS as the actress has been wooed to do series for years but had turned down every project to date, including Showtime’s Homeland and CBS’ Hostages last season. “I’m always on the lookout for amazing roles and when you see material that contains this strong of auspices, nuance and complexity it compels me to run toward it no matter the medium,” Berry said. “For five months a year I’ll get to live with and play this incredibly intelligent and vulnerable woman, and for the remainder of the year I’ll continue to look for other roles that move me as deeply as this one.” In addition to her Oscar for Monster’s Ball, Berry, repped by Vincent Cirrincione and CAA, won an Emmy for her starring role in the HBO movie Introducing Dorothy Dandridge. Extant is executive produced by Spielberg, showrunner Greg Walker, creator Mickey Fisher, Brooklyn Weaver, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank.

How is Steven Spielberg’s name attached to so many television shows, typically as executive producer?  Does he actually do anything for these shows, any creative involvment at all, besides dish the money through Dreamworks Television??  I understand that he likes to make bank and attaching his name can do wonders, but the quality of most of his television involvement is just not good.  And then he wonders why people find it hard to differentiate between quality Spielberg and cashing in Spielberg, and then they don’t want to give him another Oscar.

Huge news. Wish it wasn’t on CBS though, and had a better title. Halle Berry turned down “Homeland”? Wow.

I hope they create a Razzie for TV shows as soon as possible.

She turned down Homeland and yet she went for this?

Is this a mini-series?  Or will this be a summer event similar to Under the Dome?  I think this sounds like an odd project for Berry, especially since she has little television experience.  I can see this being semi-successful, but I suspect this might be turned into a mini-series if viewership is low.  I didn’t imagine Berry doing this type of show, I figured she would probably work on a cable drama before she resorted to a Network series.

I thought I read that Homeland was written for Danes? Or at least, with Danes in mind when writing the pilot.

It was. Alex Gansa likes to tell the story that the character’s name was originally Claire.

Anyway, I have to say there is a great difference between the types of starring vehicles on premium cable and a network show on CBS. This might have been a major “coup” several years ago, but what was the last decent thing Halle Berry’s done?

It is encouraging that networks are beginning to go for shorter, 13-episode series, though.

The writers did want Danes from the beginning but Showtime had a desire to make the character older, in her early 40’s.

Well, that explains why she turned it down. Why get Halle fucking Berry for that role?

Homeland did have some interesting casting stories. Laura Fraser was originally cast to play Jessica. Somehow they dropped her and reshot the pilot with Morena Baccarin.

Imagine Halle Berry playing Carrie and Ryan Phillippe playing Brody and Ben Affleck directing…
