I mostly avoid animated shows because it is hard enough to keep track of live-action shows, but after I watched World War Z, the premise to the South Park episode “World War Zimmerman” was irresistable and I have not laughed harder this television season.
The best-reviewed new comedy of the season on Metacritic is Rick & Morty, which premiered to little fanfare in December, but an 85 score. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is down at 70.
When it came to top ten lists for last year, the only comedy to make the aggregate top fifteen was the cancelled dramedy Enlightened. Bob’s Burgers made the lists of James Poniewozik, Todd VanDerWerff and Dan Fienberg, among others.
When it comes to the old stalwarts, shows like Archer and Adventure Time have relatively small fanbases, but passionate ones. Who is enthusiastic about Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory anymore?
Maybe Enlisted should not be the next comedy that I catch up on and I should be sampling animation instead. Where do you weigh in?February 6, 2014 at 10:41 am #310496
I gotta say, animated comedies are funnier. Archer’s been having a great season, Adventure Time, Regular Show, Bob’s Burgers, and Gravity Falls are always great, and South Park is great when Trey and Matt put all their effort in like the Game of Thrones parody.February 6, 2014 at 10:53 am #310497
I actually prefer animated shows. I love Animation Domination on FOX, and frankly animated shows on other networks too. I think they deserve a better wrap than they are made out for. Some of my favourite shows are American Dad, Family Guy, The Simpsons, Adventure Time, Regular Show and The Looney Tunes Show.February 6, 2014 at 1:26 pm #310498
I’ll take one single episode of Adventure Time, American Dad or Bob’s Burgers over entire seasons of Modern Family, TBBT, New Girl or Veep.February 6, 2014 at 1:44 pm #310499
No. I only care to watch Archer and the three classics (The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park).February 6, 2014 at 2:24 pm #310500
I mean, I hate animated shows, even the good ones (Simpsons, Archer, American Dad), so I said no, but that’s just my taste. I think they’re very different beasts really.February 6, 2014 at 2:58 pm #310501
I wanted to say no.
But I don’t watch any of either category, so.February 6, 2014 at 3:35 pm #310502
Yes, there are some episodes of south park , family guy and specially Adventure Time that are worth several episodes of live-action comedies. Will take the Christimas Episode of South Park where the creatures of the forest are possessed over an entires 22 episode sitcom season and a most recently example is the already quoted “World War Zimmerman” which is just perfect television.February 7, 2014 at 1:37 am #310503
South Park still produces some outstanding episodes but is too inconsistent and not quite as resonant as it once was. American Dad can be fun and clever but can also wretched or simply as uninspired as the current state of its parent Family Guy. Bob’s Burgers, Archer and Adventure Time are better than any current comedy other than perhaps Community.
