HBO In Talks with Lisa Kudrow to Bring ‘The Comeback’ Back for Season Two

    Lisa Kudrow as ‘Web Therapy’
    Showtime

Could life imitate art yet again, or — more specifically — could a title come true? Deadline Hollywood reports
HBO is in talks with Lisa Kudrow and director Michael Patrick King to
bring “The Comeback” back, the duo’s comedy from 2005 that’s become a
cult classic. Though it only lasted one, 13-episode season, “The
Comeback” earned respect from most critics and has developed quite the
following since it went off the air.

    Recent successful
resurrections have given new life to many TV shows with rumors
constantly swirling of comebacks, “Arrested Develpment” being the most
notable example. This makes the news of the Kudrow comedy’s possible
return even more apt. “The Comeback” was very much ahead of its time,
being a single camera reality show spoof. Relevancy shouldn’t be an
issue, even almost a decade after its original airing. Valerie Cherish
still has plenty to teach us.

Stay tuned for more news of the developing story, especially considering this is all still merely conversation.

This is weird.  I am not sure that that much has changed since it went off the air and it is not like another network is picking up.

This worthy of a freak out. I can’t even begin to explain how ridiculous it was for HBO to cancel this show, clearly a show that was way ahead of its time, so much so that many years later Kudrow’s own Friends costar ends up with a similar show that has three extremely under the radar seasons on Showtime with several Emmy nominations that sometimes you don’t exactly know where they come from and a (super easy) Globe win.

I can’t really imagine how it’ll be put together, does she get another comeback? Valerie got a show that focused on herself getting a real sitcom, maybe now she could get on a competition reality show and get another comeback out of that. Celebrity competition shows were another way to get comebacks after The Comeback ended.

    ANGRY HURTS MY THROAT.

I enjoyed “The Comeback” so much when I watched it. “Valerie Shines Under Stress” is one of my favorite comedy episodes of all time. Lisa Kudrow was outstanding in it. It’s really a tragedy that this show was cancelled so early, and I would love to see it making a comeback.

Oh, wow. I wonder if anything will actually materialize. If so, I’ll be looking forward to it. The first (and only) season was one of the best single seasons of the last decade, imo. And I can’t even remember who won that year, but Kudrow really should have won that Emmy instead.

HBO has done stuff like this before, without following through, so I’ll be keeping an eye on how this news develops.

I’d be intrigued for this to occur!

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was who won the Emmy that year for The New Adventures of Old Christine. It easily should’ve been Kudrow’s Emmy, especially since her biggest competition was snubbed: Marcia Cross for a stellar streak of performances during the mixed bag Season 2 of Desperate Housewives. She was absolutely stellar that year. She had at least half a dozen good submissions….even more so than Season 1.

But anyways, Kudrow deserves this as well, but I will say I definitely really love her on Web Therapy.

Weird Emmy year. I agree that Kudrow had the best submission, it’s still sad that it was also Kaczmareck’s final nomination. Dreyfuss won for a not so great tape. It was a win that could’ve been saved for later with much more amazing performances from her on Christine. And yes, also Marcia Cross. EXTREMELY WEIRD year for this category. Stockard Channing? Really?

Wow this is such terrific news, I hope we see these plans come to fruition! Kudrow was brilliant in the series!

I disagree that Kudrow had the best tape in the category that year, though. I thought the season finale of The Comeback was far too dramatic (if memory serves me correctly, it’s been a while) and was certainly not her funniest tape. Based on the overall season, Kudrow did give the most daring and funniest performance!

I would upset me if JLD never won for Old Christine, though, and it seemed the future years would not have found an award for her. Maybe it’ll be Kudrow to break JLD’s momentum for Veep

I think Kaczmareck should’ve won that year, it’s a shame a role like Lois ended up not rewarded. I’m not nuts about “Valerie Does Another Leno” like other people seem to be.

I would be so happy if this were to come true. I love JLD, but that Emmy belonged to Kudrow. Lisa’s performance in that first and only season was the best performance by an actress in a comedy series in YEARS. Now JLD holds that title for her stellar streak on Veep. Regardless, Kudrow has never done much for me over the years, yet I still hold her performance in The Comeback in tremendously high regard.

    MAKE. THIS. HAPPEN.

Same here. Nobody adores Julia more than me, but that award belonged to Lisa, who gave one pf the greatest performances I’ve ever seen (in any medium or genre). I’m ecstatic about this news and I hope the new episodes live up to the original ones and it won’t be another Arrested Development.

JLD’s series-best work would come the year she lost to America Ferrera in the episode, “One and a Half Men.”

Going strictly off episodes and not sentiment (Messing’s last season), due-factor (Kaczmarek; also up for her last season), breaking-of-a-Seinfeld-curse (JLD), or guilty pleasures (loved both The Comeback and Channing’s Out of Practice), this is how I would have objectively voted, based on the best episode submissions:

    1. Lisa Kudrow
    2. Jane Kaczmarek
    3. Stockard Channing
    4. JLD
    5. Debra Messing

THIS IS THRILLING NEWS!!!!! I could quote it all day!

    • “No one open up a Diet Coke, or there’ll be an explosion!”
    • “Well, I got it!”
    • “Jane, flag it.”
    • “I don’t wanna see that!”
    • “Ding dong, Avon calling!”
    • “Give her another take! Give her another take! Give her another take!”
    •  “I was just in an accident!”

And I thought she nailed her Emmy submission. The other one would have been where she goes to Palm Springs, but the finale was accessible to non-viewers, hilarious, and made you root for her (sometimes hard w/ this character). But JLD was the true comeback queen that year, and looking back, she was going to win no matter what she submitted.

JLD’s One and a Half Men lost to Tina Fey’s Sandwich Day. It seemed if JLD hadn’t won in season 1, she would have never won for Old Christine.
