    G’Day guys,

This year I wanted to see if we could brainstorm ways to improve the Emmys. As we do our live Emmy editor chats I wanted to include these suggestions. An  Emmy Think Tank of sorts. So if you could post any suggestions you have here that would be great, and I’ll include the interesting and good ones in the web shows.

LIVE EMMY WEBCHAT tonight at 7:00 PT; 10:00 ET on the Gold Derby home page. The chatroom will also be open for your questions and comments.

For refrence the new Emmy rules are here: http://www.emmys.tv/sites/emmys.tv/files/pte13_rulesandproced_rev3.pdf

    Thanks,
    Matt

The most popular suggestion will probably be to go back to the old categories for miniseries/TV movie with supporting and lead categories for actor and actress.

This isn’t actually a suggestion but I wish there was a better way around the eligibility window. The current June 1 to May 31 window may have made sense when it was only networks shows being nominated since they operate on that (increasingly antiquated) September to May schedule. But with the cable series now being nominated, many of which air in the summer, it just seems sort of awkward to me. So this year a show like Breaking Bad will be nominated for episodes that, by the time of the Emmy broadcast, will be over a year old. The alternative is to do like the SAGs or Golden Globes and operate just on a calendar year, but then you’re splitting up seasons of other shows, too. Or maybe there’s a better way to improve it? It’s kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation.

And not just for the Emmys, but one way I think all award shows could be improved would be to release the actual vote counts for the different categories after the ceremony. I’m always interested to see just how big of a landslide certain victories and just how close others were. It would add a lot more intrigue to the races overall, I think, and add a level of transparency that would be really interesting.

About the eligibility window: Why not change the eligibility window from September 1 to August 31? And then we could have the show by the end of November, so we don’t get too close to the other Award shows…

Yep, that could work. I always thought that the show was in late September to correspond with the beginning of the broadcast season, as a kind of advertisement of sorts. But moving the eligibility window ahead a few months would certainly accomodate the summer series. Then again, a show like Homeland, which airs from late September to mid-December, would fall into the same scenario that Breaking Bad is in right now. Maybe if the rules changed you’d have less shorter-run cable shows airing in that window though.

Combine most of the technical awards.  There really does not need to be five categories for sound mixing (plus three more for sound editing).  You do not see the Oscars having Best Drama Cinematography, Best Comedy Cinematography and Best Documentary.

Do not differentiate between genres in the guest categories.

Bring every category down to five nominees.  These awards are not prestigious enough.

Fix the Special Class/Variety Special rules.

Completely agree with all of this. There does not need to be 6 nominees per acting category. Yes, it’s nice when someone who might not have got in gets nominated, but most of the time there are filler nominees. 5 nominees makes it more prestigious and competitive.
