Of course, the great Cicely Tyson’s performance in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman is both iconic and brilliant. But, how was she awarded 2 emmys for the same performance? She obviously & deservedly won the Best Lead Actress-Drama win, and then
It was the year of the ridiculous “Super Emmy.” They created general categories for series and miniseries/specials–in acting, these were:
– Actor of the Year (Series)
– Actress of the Year (Series)
– Actor of the Year (Special)
– Actress of the Year (Special)
– Supporting Actor of the Year
– Supporting Actress of the Year
These were supposed to be “the best of the best,” I suppose (with the supporting categories resembling the Golden Globe TV equivalent), but they just ended up being superfluous and further devalued the Emmy, as each of the “Super Emmy” winners also won in their non-“Super” categories and thus took home two statuettes. The “Super Emmy” categories were quickly abandoned the following year but the winners got to keep their extraneous Emmys.
Did the Super Emmy look different?
And each winner won 2 that night becasue the Super Emmys were between the winners of the comedy/drama fields, and the mini/movie fields. Everyone knew who won the genre categories prior to the ceremony. I like the idea of a tournament of champions, but the logistics are too difficult.
