How many trophies would he have come away with. I assume he would have been nominated all 8 seasons.

    Winners in that timeframe were

    Robert Guillaume- Benson
    Michael J. Fox- Family Ties
    Michael J. Fox- Family Ties
    Michael J. Fox- Family Ties
    Richard Mulligan- Empty Nest
    Ted Danson- Cheers
    Burt Reynolds- Evening Shade
    Craig T. Nelson- Coach

I think a first season win is almost a lock, with 1-3 more coming in later years.

Based on the nominations the show received, I think seasons 1-3 are the only safe bets at years he would have been nominated for. After that, the show only ever received two more Emmy nominations, both for guest acting roles.

However, I do think that he would have won at least once (season 1 for sure, when it won Best Comedy Series + Writing + Directing), and potentially again for Season 2, but based on the popularity of Michael J. Fox’s role in Family Ties with the Emmys, Bill Cosby might have only won once.

The man is an Emmy magnet; he got two Golden Globes from three nominations for The Cosby Show.

Didn’t Robert Guillaume thank Bill Cosby for not submitting in his acceptance speech?

Bill Cosby definitely would’ve won for season 1 and maybe season 2 too.

    1985 (season 1):
    Harry Anderson, Night Court
    * Bill Cosby, The Cosby Show
    Ted Danson, Cheers
    Robert Guillaume, Benson (won Emmy)
    Bob Newhart, Newhart
kicked out — Jack Warden, Crazy Like a Fox

Yes, Robert Guillaume did thank Bill Cosby for not submitting in his acceptance speech.

Bill Cosby would have definitely won for seasons one and two.  Hell, he would’ve probably won Best Comedy Actor 3-4 times.

He would have won at least once maybe twice.

Didn’t Bill Cosby stop submitting the show all together? Or maybe I’m just in denial the Academy would actually stop recognizing the show after a few years.

Anyway, this forum makes me sad. Cosby should have submitted himself!!! He already had a bundle of Emmys but…The Cosby Show is what people recognize him the most for. It’s sad he doesn’t have an Emmy for that.

It would’ve been deserved for Cosby to be recognized with an Emmy for his role in The Cosby Show. It’s just almost unfortunate That the rules say you must submit yourself and it’s not like the oscars where even if you don’t want to be nominated you can be. Well Cosby made his choice!

This. Exactly. People seem to remember The Cosby Show as this seemingly unstoppable commercial and critical force, and while that’s certainly true to some extent (especially in terms of the former), the show actually didn’t dominate the Emmys except for the first year. It only got 2-3 series noms (can’t remember which), 5 regular acting noms during its entire run (granted, Cosby didn’t submit but that’s still not a spectacular number for a show that ran eight seasons). It did win directing twice, although Jay Sandrich’s reputation probably helped in that regard. Cosby Show is an interesting situation for sure, but I think Daniel’s right on the money in terms of Cosby…win in ’85, horse race with MJF in ’86. MJF was super popular by the time he won in ’86…Back to the Future had been a huge success the year before, and even John Larroquette made a comment in his ’86 acceptance speech (prior to MJF winning Lead Actor in the same ceremony) about wanting to “thank whoever was responsible for getting Michael J. Fox out of this [Supporting Actor] category.” My gut feeling says that Fox would have prevailed over Cosby in ’86.

^Besides Fox, it doesn’t seem like Family Ties was that much of an Emmy magnet either. It received one more Comedy Series nom than Cosby Show (and it never won). Who’s to say that Bill Cosby wouldn’t have continued getting honored even after the show fell out of favor (I mean, he was Bill Cosby after all)?

Maybe Cosby wouldn’t have won in 86…but he could have won any of the later years.

Family Ties is more known for MJF than the actual show itself; whereas, The Cosby Show was a force all its own.  Yes, it was Bill Cosby’s show, but the show itself was much more of a phenomenon than Family Ties.

That being said, I think the fact that Bill didn’t submit himself at all is what damaged the show’s chances of having nominations in major categories across all eight seasons.  It was certainly still popular enough in the ratings to do so.  I think that had he submitted himself, the show’s other aspects (writing, directing, etc.) and most certainly, Phylicia Rashad (and maybe a few other cast members, too) would have rode the nomination wave every year (primarily Rashad though). And needless to say, it definitely would have gotten more Outstanding Comedy Series nominations also.

Bill Cosby undoubltedly would have won for the “Pilot” episode if he was nominated the first season.

Late to the conversation, but why didn’t he submit?

Do people remember how cheesy and unfunny The Cosby Show became after its first couple of seasons? While I’m sure he would have won for at least one of the first few seasons after that it’s far from a certainty. I do think he would have managed to get nominated for most of the seasons.

Bill Cosby did not submit because he didn’t feel the need to compete with his fellow actors.  He basically said something like that.
