I always thought “John Adams” was somewhat over-rewarded back in 2008. It had beautiful production values and great acting, but it felt at times like a dry history lesson to me. It won 13 Emmys at a time when there was far less longform competition than there is today. That’s the record for a miniseries, and also the record for the most wins for any program in a single year. But if it had to compete in 2016, with the current glut of movies, minis, and anthologies (“American Horror Story,” “People v. O.J. Simpson,” “American Crime,” “Fargo,” “Roots,” and so on, and so on, and so on), would it have still gotten that many wins? How many do you think it would have won anyway?

I think that it would probably get overshadowed by OJ Simpson, Roots and Fargo in the main races, but would clean up in the technical races.

My sentiments exactly, although I genuinely wonder if Paul Giamatti would have been strong enough to beat CGJ and CBV from ACS: The People v. O.J. Simpson, or Bryan Cranston as LBJ in All the Way.

Interestingly, one of the only major races John Adams lost was for its Director Tom Hooper, who lost to Recount’s Jay Roach, who also helmed All the Way.

Yeah, I suspect it actually would. I think it’d take Miniseries, Directing, Writing, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, etc.

Sweeps are easier now that the voting is more uniform, but the limited races are so deep now that ‘John Adams’ would probably only get a fraction of those wins in 2016.

It’s encouraging that the TV landscape has changed so much in such a short period of time.
