If “Veep” wasn’t on TV, who would have Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ three Emmys for the show?

In 2012, I think it would have gone to Tina Fey. It was her best submission throughout all of 30 Rock’s run, was broadly comedic and a comeback year for the show after a weak 5th season. Zooey Deschanel also chose a fantastic episode that year that featured a ridiculously hilarious BDSM sex scene and could have been a spoiler. There were 7 nominees that year, so I don’t think anybody would have replaced JLD.

In 2013, I think it would have gone to Amy Poehler. She is massively overdue and with a two-part episode featuring an epic display of both comedic talent and dramatic range, I’m actually kind of surprised that she lost to JLD in the first place. JLD would have been replaced by Melissa McCarthy.

In 2014, I think it would have gone to Melissa McCarthy. It was a pretty good submission, none of her competition really picked anything special and voters were notably lazy this year and McCarthy is, of course, a previous winner and Falco doesn’t seem to have any more support for that show (Amy Poehler’s hypothetical win the previous year could boost her chances here, but it’s probably her weakest submission to date). JLD would have been replaced by Mindy Kaling or Anna Faris.

    Thoughts?

I agree with pretty much all of these. Emmy Rossum I think probably would have got in over Mindy and Anna seeing Shameless was welcomed over with Macy. Tina would have won for Season 6’s “The Tuxedo Begins” that episode was one of her best performances. Poehler would definitly have one by now if Dreyfus wasn’t in the race but I’m not sure if McCarthy would have taken it this year.

Better actresses than Louis-Dreyfus, that’s for damn sure.  If Showtime had the foresight to put Kristen Bell into lead comedy actress for House of Lies where she belongs instead of supporting actress (category fraud at its vile-est), she’d have one of these, Fey would have another and Faris the third.  But because she’s Julia fucking Louis Dreyfus, she gets a lifetime pass from AMPAS, just like Falco, Parsons and Modern Family do.

As much as I adore Veep, I just recently finished binge watching all of 30 Rock and Parks&Rec and I’m kinda surprised that JLD took home those first two Emmys.

“The Tuxedo Begins” was an epic performance from Tina Fey that I can’t believe was passed over by the Emmy voters. I think that at this point in 30 Rock’s run, Tina was being nominated simply as a way of thanking her for all the work she does on 30 Rock, and there was a sort of stigma attached to her, that she was a filler nominee, etc. But this was easily her best submission during 30 Rock’s run, far better than the one she won for, and was superior to JLD’s “Tears.” Oh well, Fey has an Emmy for this role already anyway, but I think history will be very kind to her when it comes to this particular race. Hindsight is always 20/20.

As for 2013, it should have been Poehler’s year. I know most people point to 2011 as the year she (and Parks and Rec as a whole) should have won for, but her best submission truly came this year. Why are the Emmy voters so resistant to her? And more importantly, how did Julia Louis-Dreyfus walking into a window beat Poehler’s hour-long showcase? This one is a true headscratcher. And unlike Tina, Amy has NOT won for this role so I can not (yet) make peace with her defeat this year.

JLD’s win this year was very truly deserved for the best season of Veep yet and her best submission to date.

2012 – Tina Fey or Edie Falco
    2013 – Tina Fey
    2014 – Melissa McCarthy

I don’t think Amy Poehler would have won.

Pretty sure I’m the only one here, but I just can’t get through ‘Veep’. I keep waiting for me to laugh out loud, but the characters are just so vulgar beyond belief, like it’s not even funny/witty vulgar; it’s just mean spirited. I guess that’s funny?  I’m still on season 1….

    Anyway back to topic:

    Poheler
    Dern
    Schilling (new blood, hells yeah!)

2012 would have been Tina Fey’s for her awesome Emmy submission of “The Tuxeo Begins”
2013 would be Amy Poehler. Hands down.
2014 would also be Poehler, but with tough competition from Schilling and McCarthy.

I thought so too at first. It gets better in 2 and 3 I don’t know how she won that first year

JDL is the Meryl Streep of Emmys.
