No. In my opinion the race is between Julia and Amy. They actually both deserve it! Hopefully it will be a tieSeptember 14, 2012 at 11:40 am #259418

If anything, I think the snafu could benefit Greenfield, not Deschanel…the voters may be having difficulty deciding between the Modern Family 4, so it may make their choice easier when they are reminded of the up-and-coming underdog….September 14, 2012 at 12:54 pm #259420
Julia will/should win imo. So ya, you’re only losing if you’re switching to Zooey, who I think is currently in 3rd/4th place behind Julia, Amy, and probably Lena.September 14, 2012 at 1:31 pm #259421
I said Deschanel was #1 from day 1. For me the reason she’s been overlooked is because she lost to Laura Dern at the Globes, but Deschanel was still the most buzzed performance and only lost because Dern (although giving a great perfomance – that I won’t deny) is a HFPA favourite. Deschanel is the buzzed perfomance of the year, and less polarising than Dunham. She has an advantage now, not so much because she has two tapes (though ‘Control’ doesn’t hurt) , but that ‘Bad in Bed’ is an excellent tape that is fresh in voters minds, and, having watched the other tapes, the most comedically challenging of all the perfomances this year. JLD has a funnier tape than Poehler, but Poehler still ranks slightly higher as I don’t believe voters can let their bias be put aside completely, in this case sympathy for Poehler in her separation which is much too common in Hollywood. I feel we’re about to enter a new trend of young comedic actresses taking centre stage, much like the cable dramadies trend we saw. I see Dunham winning with a funnier tape and Kaling being a strong contender next year.
As for Greenfield he could be a serious contender. The episode ‘Control’ is in itself excellent. I had him in second since July when we heard he was going to submit ‘Control’, because it was such a great tape. He benefits more than Deschanel in having a second tape because the scenes which aren’t about Deschanel are great, with his position at work being undermined by his co-workers and how he throws his boss into the pool, which is already a stand out scene which is the kind of over-the-top the academy likes.
His challenge is Modern Family. I am a huge Modern Family fan but I can’t see repeat wins amongst the men until they’ve all won. Stonestreet has a great showcase but I don’t think he will repeat, nor will Burell with an equally impressive selection. This is between the seasons MVP, Ferguson, against O’Neil. Ferguson shines in O’Neil’s episode with the crying scene, he is also more likeable and comic than usual in Stonestreet’s episode in challenging Cam and helping Jay. He is more charming in Burell’s episode with the SCARB business, and, in his own tape ‘Leap Day’, he is comedic and emotive all the way to the end. I really can’t justify a win for O’Neil based on the 4 tapes, especially when his own, ‘Baby on Board’, is dominated by Ferguson’s closing scene. (O’Neil is happening next year with a good delivery episode for Gloria, which will so give Vergara a win next year!)
As for Greenfield versus Ferguson, against one another, Greenfield is more over-the-top comedic than Ferguson’s subtle perfomance. The re-vote could lead to people who were stuck with the Modern Family men having this choice re-opened, which means watching 4 tapes carefully, and therefore choosing an easier but commendable option, Greenfield, who again will be fresh in the voters minds with ‘Control’, which will heavily supplement his already great supporting perfomance in ‘Bad in Bed’.
I would for sure move Greenfield much further up and anticipate an upset on the night. I still have Ferguson, only just, in #1, as I can’t see MF going from 2 acting wins to 0, (I’m predicting Wiig over Bowen – though now thinking overwise). I really can however see Greenfield doing that which Mary Louise Parker did at the Globes with Weeds.
Oddly enough New Girl has a strong chance at being successful in 3/5 of it’s races – Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, Main Title Design and maybe even Pilot Direction and Casting too!September 14, 2012 at 2:07 pm #259422
That pile of crap for a title design actually got nominated??September 14, 2012 at 2:31 pm #259423
Zooey is the best option. I just can’t see the judges going for Amy instead of Zooey or JLD. What gives Deschanel the edge, is that she has the funniest episode and the most memorable scene.September 14, 2012 at 4:10 pm #259424
I didn’t think The New Girl (or Veep, for that matter) was good enough for a Lead Actress win, but I most certainly didn’t think Mike and Molly was either, so.. Not that I am predicting her to win (sticking with Poehler) but Fey has a pretty damn strong tape. I know she has no buzz but its not from a poor choice of tape.
