“Modern Family” is set to tie “Frasier’s” Emmy record as the winningest series in TV history this year with five wins. But does it deserve the accolades?

Give us your responses on the “Modern Family” vs.”Frasier” debate. What show is better? And what show deserves the Emmy title more?

MF certainly deserved for the first two seasons, and probably deserves to win for this season as well.

The Comedy series with the most major Emmy’s is Mary Tyler Moore with 27, Modern Family is currently in 8th with 14.

And to answer the question, No. Modern Family is not even sniffing the top floor of comedy.

I’m no big Frasier fan, but it was consistently clever throughout most of its seasons and gave its characters genuine arcs, though it balanced that cleverness with a lot of annoying tics. Furthermore, Frasier’s series wins are more impressive than MF’s because it actually went up against some heavy hitters. Modern Family is winning not because it’s well liked. It’s winning because there’s so many options nowadays and none of those options are Emmy friendly and popular enough to unsurp it.

OF COURSE NOT!….What kind of a question is this? Modern Family isn’t better than a lot of comedies on the air right now and others that have been cancelled during Modern Family’s run. Much less Frasier.

They can submit some fine episodes, but the seasons in general haven’t been good since season 2. I can almost understand the Emmy voters laziness for seasons 2 and 3 because putting myself in their idiotic shoes I can’t see anything else to reward. But last year was embarassing considering they had a final season of 30 Rock, plus Louie and Veep, all much more deserving, specially Veep.

Frasier’s first 5 seasons are my favourite seasons of ANY scripted comedy. I love Modern Family in general, with the 4th season being a relative low point. The first few seasons of Modern Family are better than the last few seasons of Frasier, but those aren’t the ones that won the 5 emmys. Modern Family will likely have a similar quality trajectory, gradually getting less creative, with a few bright spots. Most comedies have that though, it isn’t a knock on Modern Family.

    Hell no.

Frasier was a very intelligent, witty show that had a small ensemble (six, if I’m not mistaken – I’m counting the dog) and made use of clever humor to appeal to a wider audience – it was smart but not divisive and high-brow. College professors and college dropouts could both enjoy it. Modern Family, however, started off in a similar way, but around season three resorted to cheap laugh-tactics and pity gags for an easy laugh. They recycle storylines, and the characters (with the exception of Phil) are incredibly unlikable – Jay is grumpy, Gloria is irritating, Claire is domineering, Cameron is whiny and Mitchell is too serious. It appears to me that Frasier made unlikable characters appear likable, Modern Family is just making unlikable characters even more unlikable and irritating, and just slapping a moral and some uplifting music to the end of the episode while the characters hug. It makes the audience feel a false fuzzy feeling, and its just cheap.

Finally, Frasier started with these two prissy, uptight brothers having to deal with their macho father and odd new nurse, and throughout the series they slowly start to grow as people and change their personality, allowing the audience to grow with them as the series goes on. Modern Family still has the same characters who don’t change – Phil is still a manchild, Claire is still a controlling matriarch, Jay is still a grumpy old man, Gloria is still a feisty foreigner, Cameron is still a flamboyant, whiny man and Mitchell is still a cold and uninviting man. And this schtick gets boring real quick

I don’t think that either show deserved/deserves to be a 5 time Emmy winner for best series.

Putting the “art is subjective” argument off to the side as much as possible, I think that it’s also important to look at both of these shows in their times. Other than Seinfeld, which I personally much prefer over Frasier and personally recognize as more polarizing, nothing else ever felt to me like a rival to Frasier during its period of dominance. Frasier was more important feeling, “sophisticated” many say, and I feel like Emmy voters couldn’t really resist that, especially compared to other shows during that time. Similarly, Modern Family is striking a note during the time in which it is airing of, well, modern families. It’s modern and it’s about families. Personally, I prefer The Big Bang Theory, but I see the appeal of Modern Family as offering something unique and important feeling in its time.

In a one-on-one faceoff, I’d personally give the edge to Modern Family over Frasier, but personally prefer shows like All In The Family and The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which, unfortunately, had to compete against each other and were therefore limited in their ability to rack up series wins, as well as many other shows throughout TV history to both Frasier and Modern Family.

I’d personally have given two of Frasier’s wins to Seinfeld (preferrably for their amazing fifth and seventh seasons)

I am not a fan of Modern Family. I think it’s an average sitcom, not anything special. And yet is won 4 Comedy Series Emmys in a row! There are lots of different sitcoms that are better than MF personally.

Frasier is classic, I do think that there is a number of Frasier episodes that I would rather watch than any episode of MF.

Agreed. Seinfeld should have won at least one more Comedy Series Emmy, especially since they had better years than Frasier some years.

Frasier is overrated and shouldn’t have won 5 emmys, but of course it’s still better than Modern Family. A lot of shows are at this point.

I would have probably given another one of Frasier’s wins to Seinfeld, but in my opinion, it was The Larry Sanders Show that really suffered the greatest during that monopoly reign. I think it was actually one of the most nominated comedies just about every year for its last few seasons, and even managed to win Writing and Directing for its final one.

Combining all the X-factors (critical acclaim, prestige, buzz, ratings, storylines, Emmy bias towards edgy series, etc.) that usually make up Comedy Series winners, nothing has really come up in the past five years that could dethrone MF’s success and wins at the Emmys.
