If you haven’t noticed, our Gold Derby odds and rankings all disagree about what’s going to win Best Comedy. Our Editors and Top 24 Users pick Modern Family. Our Experts say it’s Orange. So do most regular Gold Derby Users. Everybody has ‘Veep’ in second place no matter what they have in first. So what’s REALLY out front?

READ THIS: Here I make the case for all three rivals —

I’ve been predicting Veep since Emmy nominations morning, but I’m not sure whether I’ll still be predicting it on Emmy night. Hmm… such a tough category this year.

I really hope that OITNB doesn’t win. It’s so clearly a drama, it isn’t even funny. It will just promote the idea that switching a drama to comedy is a good move, and I really want to stop that thought process. Veep would be my choice and prediction.

I really, really want to bet against Modern Family, but I’m not getting burned again this year. It’s the safe choice and, as Tom pointed out, it needs fewer votes to win since there isn’t one strong alternative.

But OITNB is making a STRONG case to win. Netflix is campaigning hard for the show. I can’t walk out my apartment without seeing ads everywhere and these women are all over my TV. The show is going to win something major; I’m just not sure what yet.

I still don’t think Veep is big enough to win. It’s still too much of a niche show like Louie and Girls. Your average person does not watch Veep. They watch Modern Family, Big Bang and, yep, OITNB.

I totally agree. Veep clearly has the support for Julia and Tony, it has a fan base, but it just isn’t a headlines show. Orange and Modern Family make headlines they have huge fan bases that are always talking about them. Big Bang does too but I don’t think it will win due to the lack of love for writing and more of its actors. Louie is in the same boat as Veep where they have fan bases but not strong enough to see it ever win or at least at the moment. I haven’t had faith in a show beating Modern Family until this year with Orange. Orange is the strongest freshman show to enter this category since Modern Family and Glee. Big shows with big fan bases that have people talking. Veep just doesn’t seem like one of those shows. It also doesn’t hurt that Orange has a new season out so it is fresh on the minds of voters. I think that is what really helped Jeff Daniels win last year because season 2 was going on and it reminded people how great he was in season 1. I just can’t imagine Veep winning this year

When Modern Family first premiered, I watched it because I was the only critic for my company available on Wednesday night. I LOVED the first episode and thought they would win big, so I posted on my IMDB page that “they’ll win a lot of Emmys”. Guess what? They did! They won Best Comedy to top off that. Not only did they win that year, they won 4 years “Best Comedy” in a year. However, I voted for Glee since it had the most nominations and during their second season, I voted for 30 Rock. They lost. I voted for Veep the year after and placed Girls in second. Last year, I thought 30 Run had a better run than Modern Family. In addition, I placed Modern Family fourth, below Louie, Girls and The Big Bang Theory in that order.

Last year, I posted on my company’s page Orange Is The New Black is going to be a big EMMY Contendor. Yup, they have most nominations for a Comedy thanks for Creative categories. But, my boss told me: the reason Modern Family has been winning in that category is that because it is COMEDY (both refering to the show and category). So, I rewatched all the submitted episodes for Series and acting and have concluded no submission has made me laugh more than Modern Family.

    Tape Reviews for Modern Family

“First Days” – From Gloria and Phil in that commercial to Cameron at school than Claire working at Jay’s company, it was a laughingstock of well written work and funny jokes. This was Julie Bowen’s BEST performance of the season.

“The Old Man & The Tree” – It was one of the best episodes of the seasons for me. The christmas episode was well directed and I like the jokes: Phil trying to keep that machine and Cam and Mitch storyline was funny. But what was so heartbreaking was why Ed O’Neill didn’t get a nomination. Because this episode was Emmy-worthy performance for him.

“Under Pressure” – The second funniest episode of the bunch! All the cast were at their best (especially Ed O’Neill again and Eric Stonestreet’s best) and especially the 4 main guest stars, especially Jane Krakowski and John Hicky (And again, NO EMMY NOMINATION!). I laughed my head OFF especially during the in-class visits.

“Three Dinners” – An amazing well written and well directed episode (although no Emmy nomination). Sofia Vergara was amazing in here and Ed O’Neill was OUTSTANDING! The guest stars (Chazz Palminteri and Jennifer Tilly) were amazing. This episode makes me question why the Emmy’s never gave Ed O’Neill a nomination this year. But the story was amazing.

“Las Vegas” – One Statement: THE BEST MODERN FAMILY EPISODE EVER! From beginning to ending and the mix ups and mishaps (just thought it sounded perfect), I laughed and laughed and laughed. I hardly laugh after I watch an episode for the second time, but this just begs to differ.

“The Wedding: Part 2” – A well directed, well structured and well composed episode. I laughed hard when Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) threw down that one flower and picked it up again and when she replied to Pepper (Nathan Lane), “Let me see: one, two, three…” In conclusion, it was one of the best weddings I have seen on television.

Although Orange Is The New Black got the noms, I am fully for Modern Family to win and will vote for them. But still, could I be wrong, AGAIN?! Because I never got a vote in the Best Comedy Series win since 30 Rock took it in 2008.

I think people are overrating Veep’s chances. OITNB could do it because it’s the hot new thing, but sadly I’m predicting Modern Family to get its fifth win.

Modern Family will win again, and we will all groan. The entire cast will go up on stage, Steven Levitan will give another super-boring speech, and then we’re going to go and predict another show will win next year, and it won’t. Same boring procedure over and over and over again. *yawn*

Modern Family is not that bad but some people in here love to ride the Veep’s boat and that’s perfectly fine because the show is perfect but I feel it’s more of an acting/writing showcase than a whole comedy series winner. Something always feels off everytime I think about Veep’s chances. OITNB has the buzz, the ensemble, the social issues… It would be a fair winner (perhaps more deserving than Veep). Right now I have Modern Family in first, Orange in second and Veep in third.

    Right now, I’m predicting:

    1. Veep
    2. Modern Family
    3. Orange is the New Black

I wholeheartedly agree with everybody that Orange has the most buzz of these three shows at the moment, but I’m still believe that voters will find it too dramatic when they watch the submitted episodes.  The only rationale I have for Veep right now is a) it gained traction in categories that it hadn’t appeared in before and b) the Modern Family fatigue feels palpably real this year and I think there will be a new winner.  Modern Family stays in second, though, because I’ve bet on the tides turning before and have been burned… It’s not too much of a stretch to think voters will be complacent with Modern Family winning again, although that would be deeply upsetting.

“Modern Family” is gonna tie “Frasier” this year. There’s nothing stopping it. Nothing.

True … I think. OITNB’s buzz is pretty deafening, but then again their tape selections weren’t that great. Still, it’s MF’s biggest threat.

This is probably going to be MF’s LAST best comedy series win becuase all of the others are nipping at it’s heels.

“Modern Family” is still in the driver’s seat. None of these shows submitted knockout tapes in Comedy Series, but given the choice between the safe returning champion versus support for divided camps (whether we’re talking about populist “The Big Bang Theory,” new IT dramedy “Orange Is the New Black,” indie/fringe cred “Louie,” and HBO niche shows “Veep” and “Silicon Valley”), it’s the go-to voter-friendly choice that will win out, I think. If there was a scenario where either “Veep” or “Orange Is the Black” hadn’t made the roster, then a single, strong alternative might have been enough to topple “Modern Family,” but I’m not seeing that happening this year with the field being what it is.
