I watched Laurie Metcalf’s Horace and Pete submission and wow…what a submission. In the old system it would be unbeatable. In the old system I wouldn’t have to worry about Margo Martinale and her 2 minutes of screen time. But now I do. Do voters even know about Horace and Pete or will they simply name check whoever the hell they want to give it to?

I also loved Melora Hardin’s tape and think she would be a sure fire winner in the old system. I still think she can win with her competition having real vote split potential but again…this is why we fell in love with the Emmys. For an underdog journeyman or woman to win based on performance!

I fell in love with Goldderby due to Emmy season and how crazy it was that we could see upsets and wins coming with the episode system. Now I feel like I am wasting my time and waiting for highway robbery to take place.

Yep. Hard to care too much about what people submit because I already feel that I have everything that I need to know to predict the winners as best as I can.

I’m just gonna hold on to the random belief that they still have some impact, maybe 25% impact instead of the 50-75% impact they used to have. Or maybe it just took a year for the new system to pan out. Ok, fine, they don’t matter.

I pretty much agree. I hate to admit it since I love her but Character Actress Margo Martindale winning last year pretty much took all the fun out of figuring out these races based on tapes. But yeah I guess we’ll see what happens this year. Maybe the new “voting for one” instead of ranking will give us something different.

By the time that the Emmys rolled around last year, I had resigned myself to tapes not making much of a difference, but I still figured that they would make a little bit of a difference in a close race. Then Peter Dinklage beat Jonathan Banks.

Nobody with the worst tape in the category should ever win, but that is exactly what happened last year with Margo Martindale and what will happen with Kevin Spacey this year.

The new system is also fucking up the technical categories. It is no coincidence that Game of Thrones suddenly won six Emmys last year that it had consistently lost under the tape system. Transparent won costumes. Olive Kitteridge won editing. The Last Man on Earth pilot lost writing, directing and editing. Modern Family won sound for an episode that takes place entirely on a computer screen.

Mmm, I’d forgotten how GoT only had 1 Editing nom after 4 seasons.

People have lost their marbles. These should be the most boring Emmys ever, but Gold Derby odds now favour:

    Rami Malek over Kevin Spacey
    Robin Wright over Viola Davis
    Kit Harington over Peter Dinklage
Sam Esmail over David Benioff & D.B. Weiss
Courtney B. Vance over Bryan Cranston
    “The Race Card” for writing

Can the general public see the tapes, or just the voters?

It was Game of Thrones’ “Lord of the Rings” time. Simple.

Transparent deserved all of its Emmys except for Bradley Whitford IMHO. The Costumes in the specific episode submitted were easily the best in the category. I think the people in the Costumes branch watched their episodes, even if that obviously wasn’t the case with every branch.

Olive was the 2nd best in that category, but a distant 2nd. The finale of 24: Live Another Day would have been a much more deserving winner, due to the greater impact and precision of the Editing as a key component of the suspense of the story.

The Last Man On Earth should not have won any Emmys. If you like it, that’s perfectly fine, I have a friend that does. But there is no way that TLMOE S1 was more of an achievement than Veep S4 or Transparent S1. I always felt that people were overestimating that show with the exception of Will Forte in Comedy Actor tbh.

And the Modern Family win for Sound Mixing… yeeah that one made no sense at all. ;( Like Margo Martindale winning for her Americans cameo, its something I’m sure would never have happened under the old system. The Simpsons or even Silicon Valley would have made far more deserving winners. Or heck, give Sound Mixing to the series finale of Parks and Recreation, in what would have been its first and only Emmy win!

@jasonbrown, only the voters can log on.
