I just watched the Pilot and to be honest, I was surprised it was the best I’ve seen so far among network TV. It has the reviews to back it up but of course it’s difficult to call it this early but I think The CW has something special and very promising with this series. I looked if it already has an official thread here at Gold Derby and didn’t find any but I think this show deserves some space.

Starring Gina Rodriguez, Andrea Navedo, Ivonne Coll, Justin Baldoni, Brett Dier and Yael Grobglas

Developed for Television by: Jennie Snyder Urman (Emily Owens, M.D.)

Pilot Episode directed by Brad Silberling (Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events)

    Here’s the official extended trailer:

The show currently has Metacritic scores of 80. It is favorably compared to Ugly Betty. But being a CW show will hurt its awards chance if there is one.

I know and I also happen to love Ugly Betty despite its flaws. I just hope veiwers will give it a chance despite being on The CW. And also for the show to find its footing story-wise eventually.

When I originally so the first promo, I thought to myself this is the dumbest idea for a TV show ever and then reviews started coming in with love for the show. I watched it, I didn’t hate it nor did I love it but it has my attention

I watched it, and was very surprised by it. When I first saw the promo, I thought for sure it was going to be critically panned, and that the whole storyline of how she got pregnant and everything after that was going to be stupid, bad writing. But I actually kind of liked it. And I’m glad the critic reviews back it up.

Between this and The Flash, it looks like the CW is off to a good start this year.

    It was awful.

C’mon! The pilot was sweet and unassuming. It knows what kind of show it is and just goes with it.
I liked the lead a lot and who knows, maybe she could get in?
Someone made a comment that they should rename this show to Jane The Malpractice Suit Plaintiff.

Okay, well, maybe it wasn’t “awful” but it’s not my cuppa tea.

My sister made me watch this and despite every fiber of my bitter being, even I have to admit that this is cute show.

I watched it.  Being the second-best reviewed pilot of the year got my
hopes up, but I can very much see how this is an 80 and not an 85 or 90
because this is just a very solid show, which is fine and puts it ahead
of most pilots now that I think of it, but there is nothing
extraordinary here.  Good on the CW for making their best-reviewed pilot ever.

    What
happened to Gina Rodriguez at the TCA summer press tour was bizarre and
they would have given this show something of a free pass regardless of
its quality, so it is good that it turned out well.  This show has no
chance at the Emmys, but I predict that the TCA will give Rodriguez a
nomination in Individual Achievement in Drama if the show can mantain a
reasonable level of quality  and the show one for Outstanding New
Program regardless.  If the show confuses everyone by flip-flopping back
and forth to comedy like Orange is the New Black, Rodriguez
will not be nominated.  I doubt that she gets it, but she is in
contention for a Globe nomination.  I think that she can get a Satellite
nomination.  All of the guilds will ignore it, except maybe the casting
one in their dramatic pilot category.

They took the idea from the awful soap opera we had here and they used pretty much every Ugly Betty element they could find to make it easier for audiences. Gina Rodriguez definitely is a great find, but the Pilot was very uneven, I think I’ll keep watching but there’s no need to get anybody’s hopes up. It’s a soap opera on the CW with a mostly latin cast, I doubt it succeeds. Plus, the plot for the show is very thin and comes with a very obvious and limited expiration date, so even though it’s not a “what happened?” show like all those that get cancelled easily, it didn’t show sings of making it successfully past the pregnancy, love triangle, crazy jelous villain bitch, birth, marriage proposal, break up, marriage again, happily ever after, the end. All of which could very much fit into a single season.

If the show keeps up I do see a Globe nomination for Rodriguez, but nothing else past that and with Orange switching definitely not a win.

I think once you got thru the plot’s ridiculousness then it’ll get smoothly. Of course, it will depend on what tone the writers will take for the series. But yeah, I realize there’s not much in the plot. I don’t know if The CW will stretch this to a 22-episode series. I think a 12-13 episodes a season will work better for this ala The Carrie Diaries and I prefer that than dragging the story for a full season, after that we’ll see.

Also, yes an Emmy attention is impossible but if this continues its quality then I hope the cast especially Rodriguez get some consideration at other award giving bodies. I believe The CW will be going to Comedy for this as said on the recent promos so the Golden Globes might take that bait but as said, “this is a CW show”.

    This show is getting good!

The fiancé is too young to be lead detective though and it is weird that no one cares that someone was brutally murdered.

This show has been consistently entertaining.  Does anyone have any deeper thoughts?

I’m loving this show. Gina Rodruguez is fantastic and the relationship between the 3 Villatoro woman, especially between Xiomara and Jane is great. It feels like one of the most mature mother/daughter relationships I have seen on tv. People should really give it a shot.
