One of my favorite things regarding this time of year is to see who is selected to be honored at the next round of lifetime achievement awards at the golden globes, SAG, AFI, Mark Twain Humor, and the Kennedy Center Honors.

Last year, the announcement was moved up to July so producers had more time to produce the show. Last year the following were selected:

    Carole King
    George Lucas
    Rita Moreno
    Seiji Ozawa
    Cicely Tyson

The Eagles were selected but had to postpone because of Glenn Frey who recently passed away. I assume they will still honor the group with the passing. So who do you think will be selected this year?

Henley is alive and well. Glenn Frey is deceased

Of the people who have a corresponding first rate resume and legendary status I think Al Pacino should finally get in. I don’t know enough about dance, opera, classical musicians to really make predictions. I would love to see Ellen Burstyn honored one day.

I always wanted Jane Fonda to be honored, however I think the nominating/selecting committees would likely shy from such a controversial honoree. Woody Allen too, of course he would likely refuse to attend anyway.

Someone mentioned Debbie Allen earlier, she would be an inspired choice for sure.

Some potential candidates I think that all have a chance:

    Alan Alda
    Woody Allen
    Edward Asner
    Kathy Bates
    Candice Bergen
    Jeff Bridges
    Garth Brooks
    Diahann Carroll
    Cher
    Eric Clapton
    George Clooney
    Glenn Close
    Ethan Coen
    Joel Coen
    Phil Collins
    Francis Ford Coppola
    Elvis Costello
    Tom Cruise
    Billy Crystal
    Tyne Daly
    Daniel Day-Lewis
    Ellen DeGeneres
    Johnny Depp
    Robert Duvall
    Michael Douglas
    Gloria Estefan
    Sally Field
    Harvey Fierstein
    Jane Fonda
    Harrison Ford
    Jodie Foster
    Michael J. Fox
    Whoopi Goldberg
    Gene Hackman
    Anthony Hopkins
    Ron Howard
    Mick Jagger
    Diane Keaton
    Jessica Lange
    Jerry Lewis
    Patti LuPone
    Madonna
    Barry Manilow
    Johnny Mathis
    Reba McEntire
    Liza Minnelli
    Helen Mirren
    Bette Midler
    Mary Tyler Moore
    Bob Newhart
    Al Pacino
    Bernadette Peters
    Brad Pitt
    Debbie Reynolds
    Arturo Sandoval
    Susan Sarandon
    Martin Sheen
    Kevin Spacey
    Rod Stewart
    Oliver Stone
    Donald Sutherland
    James Taylor
    Dick Van Dyke
    Denzel Washington
    Betty White

From that list the ones that I think we could very well hear awarded this year would be:

    Glenn Close
    Michael Douglas
    Gloria Estefan
    Harrison Ford
    Patti LuPone
    Bette Midler
    Liza Minnelli
    Al Pacino
    Bernadette Peters

    Previously announced Eagles

    and

    Gladys Knight
    Liza Minnelli
    Mary Tyler Moore
    Al Pacino

A lesser known artist will probably occupy one of the slots, but I have no clue who to predict for that. They might try for 6 honorees like last year was originally going to have.

Given MTM’s incredibly poor health – Dick Van Dyke recently said she no longer communicates – I suspect it is unfortunately unlikely she’s selected.

Do you have a link to an interview or video clip of him saying this? If true, that’s horribly sad news. She most recently did an episode of Hot in Cleveland back in 2013 and, while she didn’t look particularly well, I thought that was more a result of her plastic surgeries and illness than anything particularly debilitating. A lot can change in three years, though.

Thanks for the info! I found this clip from the interview discussing Mary, for those who are interested:

Yay. Al Pacino finally gets the honor. James Taylor is another good pick.

I’m very surprised they picked Mavis Staples before awarding Gladys Knight or Dionne Warwick. Her recent performance at the White House must’ve helped her chances.

    Poor TV snubbed again. Ugh.
