Hemsley – The Jeffersons (show began 1975, only nomination 1984)

    ·
    Joan
Collins – Dynasty (show began 1981, only nomination 1984)

    ·

Years listed are by Emmy season, not calendar dates.

Stars who were on the show from the beginning and took 3 or more seasons to get nominated

Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights (show began 2007, first nomination 2010, win 2011)
Matthew Fox, Lost (show began 2005, only nomination 2010)
Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights (show began 2007, first nomination 2010)
January Jones, Mad Men (show began 2008, only nomination 2010)
Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones (show began 2011, only nomination 2013)
Sharon Gless, Burn Notice (show began 2008, only nomination 2010)
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men (show began 2008, first nomination 2010)
Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad (show began 2008, first nomination 2012, win 2013)
C.C.H. Pounder, The Shield (show began 2002, only nomination 2005)

Stars who joined up after the first season and took 3 or more seasons to get nominated

Jonathan Banks, Breaking Bad (show began 2008, joined 2009, only nomination 2013)
Giancarlo Esposito, Breaking Bad (show began 2008, joined 2009, only nomination 2012)
Jared Harris, Mad Men (show began 2008, joined 2010, only nomination 2012)
Mark Margolis, Breaking Bad (show began 2008, joined 2010, only nomination 2012)
Elizabeth Mitchell, Lost (show began 2005, joined 2007, only nomination 2010)

It’s very rare to get noticed this late into a run, and even rarer to win. These are just some Drama nominees from the last 6-7 years and, from the list, only Chandler and Gunn have won thus far.

Ed O’Neill may not be a late bloomer compared to some of the others listed, but compared to the rest of the Modern Family cast he is.

I’m always so surprised that the Friends cast never got nominated all at once a la Modern Family? Was Friends not a critical and commercial darling when it was airing? It just seems so obvious that 3 guys and 3 girls would all score supporting nods for the first couple of years…apparently not!

The state of broadcast sitcom in the 90’s was much healthier than right now. Friends’ popularity has outlasted a lot of those shows, but there was a ridiculous amount of competition then, especially in the supporting categories. Seinfeld, Frasier, Roseanne, Murphy Brown, Mad About You, Will & Grace, Sex and the City, Everybody Loves Raymond and so forth were all around during its run. Also, both Friends and Seinfeld were a bit too “young” and “hip” yet too conventional all at once for the Emmys throw themselves over. And no, Friends was never really a critical darling. Its first season in particular had mixed critical reception, which it kinda deserved.

Even with some of the biggest critic fans of Friends Cox always got mixed reviews. Biggest complaint was just one note harsh brittleness.
